I have been told that sludge buildup in this

No way. Unless you sit in city traffic for 8 hours a day, I don't think you can trash an engine that fast. Especially if you have changed your oil. First thing you do, Is get a can of Marvel mystery oil, when your oil is one qt low, dump this in. Or do it next time you change it, make it the fifth qt. Save the filter, mark on the filter "before", Then get some fuel injection cleaner, and fill it up with high test. Now were going down the turnpike!!! Run that thing, fast, step on it, burn that stuff out of there, pass a few cars. Next time you change the oil, get the old filter, mark the new one,(after), take them to somebody who will cut it apart for you. Look at the paper elements and see the difference. You probably won't believe it! This operation may take a month, but try it. Or you can go back to the dealer and pay him $4,000 to do what you just did for $10. One more thing, if it doesn't run better, take a qt of water, and pour it down the intake with the engine running and your hand on the throttle, rev that stuff through there, it will steam clean the inside of your engine. You only have to do this if you think the dealer is right, if your car is running ok, somebody is pulling your leg. But this won't hurt. And it will clean out your engine.

Replaced oem battery 18 mo. ago with an Interstate

Well typically i'd say your battery is fine considering the age of it, But when you said you drove it for 20 mi and it restarts with no hesitation that makes it seem like the battery is losing power i.e. dead cell. this is not uncommon. The way the electrical system works on your car is such: the battery is there to merely start the car and provide a bridge for the electricity, the alternator takes over the second the car starts and provides more power than the battery makes so that it'll charge the battery and also provide for the rest of the electronics on the car. If you dont drive your car much this problem can happen, also subwoofers and anything more than what your car was designed with would make thisn problem more common, especially with the newer foreign cars with as much electronics are on them now. The best thing i can say is return it and claim your warranty for a new battery.

My wife's 2004 Lexus ES-330

Hello Mr Gordon.
If you have been following the maintainence schedule in your owners manual according to the manufacturers guideline for regular service the 15,000 mile inspection should be;
Inspect (not necessarily replace)
Ball joints and dust boots.
Brake hoses and lines.
Brakes and traction controls
Constant velocity joint boots
Coolant
Exhaust system
Steering linkages and steering gear.
Body and frame condition.
Replace
Engine oil and filter.
Rotate tires

Now something you are probably aware of is that although your car is low on miles there is also a time factor.
Replacement of fluids such as the coolant and brake fluid would be a concern. Brake fluid is hydroscopic (absorbs water) and over time should be flushed. This I would recommend if it hasn't been done already.
Coolant also has additives that break down and drop out of solution so if it hasn't been done by this time would be a good idea.
Your dealer may also be concerned about the timing belt composition breaking down as well by this time. If they are recommending it I would go with their advice.
But even with all that it seems a little bit on the expensive side.
Ask them definitively what the breakdown of each cost is before it is done. It's their job to do it for you. They are getting well paid to do it too, so don't be shy. Ask questions on why a certain job is necessary and write it in a notepad. It may shake some costs down for you.
If you have further concerns, ask me. Be glad to help.

Maitnance req. light is on

Its time for an oil change! Mainly preventative maintenance...Have them read any codes in the ECU to see what may be wrong. They will reset the lights.....or.....
1. With your car OFF, place your key in the ignition and turn to "On". Do not start the car.
2. Find the odometer button and press until it reads the total odometer setting, (not the Trip A or Trip B setting).
3. Turn the key to OFF.
4. Place your finger back on the odometer button, press and hold. At the same time, turn the key back to "On".
5. Hold the odometer button in until the MAINT REQD light goes out...should take about 8-10 seconds.

Repalcing the main beam headlight bulb on the 2004 Lexus ES 330

The bulb is held in place by a wire capture that hooks under a small metal hook on bottom of housing. The rubber shroud or boot needs to be pulled off first to expose the bulb and intermittent socket that actually holds the bulb. To remove the bulb push the wire capture (the end that is looped) toward the front of the car and then to the side to disengage the wire from the small hook, be sure to note the position of the plastic socket that the bulb plugs into as it only fits one way.Notice the tab on the bulb base faces up. The bulb does not fit snugly in the headlight socket, it is held in place entirely by the wire catch.
