Well an exhaust leak is not usually a hum, more like a rumble. You should be able to listen under the car while someone is revving up the engine and hear an exhaust leak. No such thing. Are you confusing the catalytic converter in the exhaust with the evaporative emissions system that routs fuel tank vapors to a charcoal canister and then into the engine to be burned? The catalytic converter just takes the exhaust gas through it, and by a chemical reaction with the rare metals in the converter acting as a catalyst, it burns most of the remaining hydrocarbons (unburnt fuel) in the exhaust for a cleaner, less polluting exhaust.

The problem may be low Freon, has it been pressure tested to see what the system pressures are? If not sure try adding some freon yourself using a a/c recharge kit available at most autoparts stores, just follow the instructions, if you are sure freon pressure is ok there may be a problem with the a/c clutch relay, it's located in the fuse box under the hood, all relays and fuses are marked on the inside of the cover, look for the 'MG/CL relay and try replacing it.
