Vinyl top removal
Talk with a panel shop or a vehicle upholsterer but as the vinyl is normally glued on with contact cement the I suspect that there will be paint damage. It may help to use a heat gun to soften the vinyl as you go but do not get too enthusiastic with the heat as it may damage the paint underneath . Which ever way it will be a slow job

Make sure the carburetor is bolted down securely so that no air is leaking in under it. Make sure the screws around the top of the carburetor are secure.
Being careful, get your head down into the engine compartment while the car is idling, listening for an air leak.
Take an unlit propane torch that has the valve open, and pass it along all the intake component mating surfaces. When you get to a leak, fuel from the torch will pass through the leak rather than regular air, and the engine will speed up a little (or a lot). Point it at all vacuum hose ends (both ends of each hose).

This car originally contained R12, if you can find it you can use it. The other option if this has not already happened is you can convert the system from R12 to R134a, which is readily available, all auto part stores carry these kits. R12 AC fitting are threaded and R134a systems have slip on quick connect fittings.

It could be a lot of things combined like an improperly ajusted choke to a battery with to low of cold cranking amps. However it may save you a lot of greaf and money in the long run to simply plug your car in on thoes long and cold winter nights.good luck.
