1986 Chrysler LeBaron Questions & Answers
Where do I find location of fuel pump fuses or relay for 1986 Chrysler labaron?
1986? oh boy, it\'s been a long time. I don\'t recommend extensive use of starting fluid, it is hard on valves and rings.if I remember correctly, this year still had fuses inside the glove box. Look there first. If nothing than raise the hood and look for black box. Remove cover by pressing the snaps out of the way and inside the cover there should be a guide to tell you which is for the fuel pump. I don\'t like being the one to tell this, but there is a possibility the fuel pump has shorted out. Try replacing the fuses, oops it might a relay instead of fuse, if that doesn\'t fix it , it fear you will need a new pump.
My 1986 chrysler lebaron loses power and dies
have the fuel pressure checked with a gauge it should be 35 lbs pressure and if its been a while change the fuel filter. if these check out all right then based on the age and possibly high mileage the catalytic converter may be plugging up and need replacing.
Overheating
check to see if your4 rad fans are working and get another thermostat
Battery not charging..good alternator...internal
that year 1986 alternator voltage regulator either external or internal follow alternator battery feed wire if you see battery feed wire going to black box mounted on fire wall you have external voltage regulator.if voltage regulator okay problem could be alternator fuse or fuse link could be faulty battery cables if cables over 20 years old but make sure alternator drive belt tension correct.
Intermitent starting
On some models you can remove the pump from the side of the gas tank. On the others, you have to drop the tank to get the pump out of the top.
HOW TO INSTALL ALTERNATOR BELT DIAGRAM
ALTERNATOR/WATER PUMP DRIVE BELT(courtesy of autozone)
On most of the 1981-88 model year engines covered in this information, the alternator/water pump drive belt is tensioned by a screw type tensioner, which makes precise tension adjustment easy.
- On 1981-87 models, loosen the locknut, located on the locking screw or lockbolt-located in a slotted portion of the outboard alternator mounting bracket.
- On 1988 models, loosen the T-bolt, located in the center of the disc shaped portion of the outboard alternator bracket.
- Tighten or loosen the drive belt tensioning bolt. This bolt is tightened to increase belt tension and loosened to decrease it.
- When the belt tension is correct, tighten the lockbolt.
this is the 2.2 gas engine, if its different here is a link to the info at autozone

Not charging
First tell me why you don't think it's charging.
Because of the voltage reading you are getting at the battery terminals? The range you want is between 13.6v to 14.2v. The higher the voltage the lower the amps. and true the other way, the lower the voltage the higher the amps. If you get a reading of 13.6v or lower, the alt is nearing or at max output. An alt can only run at maximum for around fifteen minutes and it will start slinging solder from overheating. It's a good indication the battery is either totally dead or junk. Charging above 14.2 the alternater is running wide open and is only putting out high volts which will cause the battery to boil , in turn destroying it. This is a bad alternater. All alternaters have integrated voltage regulater with the exception of ver few of the earlier ones. You cannot test an alternater by removing a battery cable to see if the engine keeps running without taking great risk of damaging the alt, regulator. So tell me why you feel it isn't charging. Remember an alt is not made to charge dead batteries. Their sole function is to maintain the battery charge. Without a battery, the alt won't last 10 seconds.
Hope to hear from you and good luck.
