Replacing piston
It could all vary depending on mileage, availability of the engines either new or used for that car and if you plan to do it yourself. Price range could be $750 doing it yourself to $2000+ having a shop do it.

Blown piston
IMO I would consider the engine junk, take it someplace and have a used engine put in if the car is worth it.

A4 2001 1.8 has little power throughout all gears
Mrs Tercia, have you checked whether you might have either blocked exhaust system or Broken and blocked Catalytic converter? What I mentioned are the main cause of loosing power, backfiring and make the car not drive able and possible blow either the engine or catch fire.

Lots of codes now car wont start
The codes would appear to be an Oxygen Sensor
problems & Failed Converters, smell or not
Can't smell after all the expensive rare metals have burned off
from over heating for years
Need to find out why they failed
Check for cylinder misfires & fuel trim issues

It won't reverse.
Manual or Automatic? It sounds like you have a broken linkage or a bad transmission. You'll need to take it to a transmission shop and have them troubleshoot it.

Wheel Bearings
Yep - our cars are known for eating wheel bearings (I have a 99 2.8 quattro). I just did my rear left, which was howling, and now that it is quiet, I can hear the rear right going bad. The B5 chassis cars (96-01) are known for wheel bearing, control arm, and cruise control failures almost as much as they're known for fantastic driving and excellent traction in bad weather.

Oil min light keeps coming on
What kind of oil? Is its not synthetic it's wrong...the Audi engines have a small oil pickup tube and the cheap oil gunks up the engine and clogs pump screen causing light to come on eventually engine failure....you need to flush engine ....you can use kerosine or go to parts store and tell them you want to clean the internals of gunk ...pour in engine oil let run for few min drain oil ...buy cheap oil for this do same thing 3 times ...when light goes off your done fill with fully synthetic oil and you just saved your engine ...only synthetic oil
