Check the a/c oil level. When an A/C continuously turns on and off it is usually low on coolant oil.

Where is the thermastat located

Most cars the thermostat is where the top radiator hose enters the motor. Likely in the top of the engine. There should be two bolts holding it on. Make sure when you replace the thermostat you put it in the right side up. or it won't work.

I have a 1991 mercury cougar with a 5.0 .the idle

check the air idle control valve , its located in the air tube that leads to the throttle body of your motor,, also, clean the throttle body with carb cleaner, just remove the air tube leading to the motor,, clean the part that it attaches to on the top of the motor, a few sprays will clean off all the black stuff that accumulates inside of it,, open the flap and clean around that too, wipe the excess out with a clean rag,

I have abs system

Check your vacuum brake booster; with the engine off, press firmly on the brake pedal, then start the engine. If the pedal sinks noticeably, the booster is OK. If it doesn't, the drum-like device between the fire wall and the master brake cylinder is bad and should be replaced.
If you can't get a good feel from this action, you should have a specialist check your brake system; this isn't something to ignore.

High idle aprox 2500 rpm.

Check the idle air control valve. It is mounted on the side of the throttle body. It acts like a choke on fuel injected engines. Here is a link with some pictures and prices for the 3.8 and 5.0 litre engines....i hope this helps.

Can you tell me where

The thermostat is located under the gooseneck at the end of the engine side of the top radiator hose. After it is completely cooled off ,preferably after sitting all night you can release any pressure by removing the radiator cap. Then loosen the hose clamp at the goose neck and you will be able to see it inside. You will have to take out the two bolts in the neck to gain access to it. Remember you will need to drain some of the coolant into a drain pan from the lower radiator petcock beforehand. Also dont leave the coolant sitting as cats and other animals will drink it and die.

The overdrive is not working

Cars that old usually encounter faulty over drive problems. It burnt out so many miles ago. It's probably a good thing...over drive's that old usually run your engine hot anyways.
