Hi, to replace the starter, please disconnect the negative battery terminal first.
To
get the starter out, you will need to remove the air cleaner. First
take the air filter out, then you can see the screws that hold the air
cleaner box. Remove the screws and separate the box from the pipe that
goes to the engine.
Next see the picture below. This is your starter. If you can,
first unscrew the nut on the solenoid and remove the wires. The smaller
wire just pulls off the small terminal. If you cannot reach the nut
with the starter in place, it is OK to unbolt the starter first and then turn the back up to access the wires.
The starter is held in by 2 bolts. Remove these bolts and the starter will come out of the transmission.
This is all you have to do to remove the starter.
If you can, take the old starter with you to the parts store.
If the parts store has a starter tester, have them test the old starter before you purchase a new one.
They will also want to keep the old starter when they sell you a new one, so that they can rebuild the old starter.
To install the starter, just bolt it back in and reconnect the wires and then the battery terminal.
If you had to let the starter down to disconnect the wires, then replace the wires before bolting in the starter.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
