Fixing Car That Randomly Dies While DrivingDiagnosing Intermittent Stalling Issues
Michael:
You must start bleeding the brakes at the wheel farthest from the master cylinder (usually the right rear), then the next farthest from the master cylinder, then the next, then the closest. If your master cylinder is at the left front of the car, start with the right rear, then the left rear, then the right front, then the left front. If you don't bleed the brakes in the correct order, you are just shifting the air in the lines from one line to another. Make sure that you close the bleeder before letting the brake pedal up, and the engine should not be running when you bleed the brakes... Make sure that the emergency brake is off. Make sure that the master cylinder does not run out of brake fluid at any time that you are bleeding the brakes.
Finding Automobile Repair Manuals Online
Many of our patrons are interested in saving money by
repairing their cars themselves. They know from experience
that repair manuals and diagrams can make their work a lot
easier. When their local library doesn't have the manual they
need, they decide to see if they can save a little more money
by finding a free copy of the manual or diagram on the
Internet.
Unfortunately, these materials are almost NEVER available on
the Internet for free! The reason for this is that the people
who publish the manuals and own the copyright aren't about to
give the material away free--they want to get paid for their
work!! Also, many of the manuals are so large, it would be
very costly to place them online and store all the Web pages
or provide access to them from a database.
The Internet, though, has a large number of web sites where
you can buy service manuals and schematics from bookstores,
publishers, and other collectors. Here is just a sampling of
what sites are out there:

It may just need servicing/adjusting.
Your reverse gear is actually first gear ... when you select reverse another 'cog' fits into the toothed wheels to change the direction of first gear ... to give you reverse...
It may be a sticky valve or just a bit of adjustment (workshop job..) that is required.
What you can try ..
Start the car ... move the lever through all the positions several times (foot on brake..). Keep your foot on the brake and then put it in reverse and rev the car. Hard!
Try doing it several times.
An auto transmission works on valves opening and closing. Reverse gear - in comparison with the forward gears - is seldom used. The reverse valve can 'stick'. Try forcing it to open ... frighten it ... but keep your foot on the brake...
if this is a diesel its a days job,DISCONNECT BATTERY UN DER PASSENGER SEAT take front grill and the front cross member off drain radiator loosen all bolts on radiator do not undo any connections on air con. jack up car remove plastic belly plate remove drivers side wheel and inner plastic arch cover ther is also a strut that needs to be removed, using a screwdiver prise off the fan timing belt then remove 4 bolts underneath that hold the radiator up you will then need to remove drivers side headlight to gain accsess to the bottom alternator bracket, with this done you can then carefully remove the alternator and remove the bush box and replace the bushes
1
Press the "Unlock" key on your key fob to deactivate the alarm and unlock the car doors. If you've lost your key fob, unlocking the driver's side door with the key automatically deactivates the PT Cruiser's alarm.
2
Look for the black alarm box underneath the dashboard, on the driver's side of the car. Locate the override button on the box -- either a black or red button, depending on the year of the PT Cruiser -- but don't press it yet.
3
Put the key in the ignition and turn the key so that the battery is on, but the engine doesn't start. Quickly push and hold in the override button until you hear the alarm sound once, indicating the alarm is disabled.
the p 0420 is the HO2S bank 1 or cat converter below efficiency threshold
replace the HO2S first as it is the cheapest then replace the cat converter bank 1
have the accredited auto electrician bench test the alternator and regulator for over voltage
test it with a DVOM to check voltages. then if you need to replace undo the electrical connector at the sensor. using the proper size wrench undo the sensor from the exhaust and install new one. the up stream sensor is the first one in the exhaust from the manifold that you come to traveling back in the exhaust system. if you have a V6 or 8 there will be one on either side so you will have to know which sensor the code is for, like bank one or two. bank one is always on the side that cylinder one is on and bank two is always on the side cylinder two is on.
Ensure coolant system has been properly filled.
Carry out all air bleed operations as specified by the manufacturer- (don't forget to open the heater core supply valve).
if you have the owners manual look in it. it will show where the fuse panel is and what each fuse does. if not buy a test light and check each fuse at both ends with the circuits powered up.
