1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Questions & Answers
Jeep has loss of power
If you have not had a tune up recently...or ever...then it is time for one. I bet if you take the plugs out you will find that the contacts are all burned off. If that is the case then replace all the spark plugs and you should be good. I would also recommend doing the wires.
I have a 1988 Jeep
if this just started when you changed the oil and filter, then it might be the filter,it did it in my 89 jeep so i changed the filter to another brand and my oil pressure came back to normal.so i would recomend and stp or k&n or wix filter.if that doesnt then start looking at the oil pressure sensor and wire lead.you could also use a mechanical oil pressure guage and check it that way to.
The dome light does not

The hood release latch to my 1988 wagoneer is
Take a long flat screw driver and you reach the hood latch under the hood. You might need a flash light to see the latch under there. You have to push a little for it to releese. Thats how I got mine open.
Vehicle overheating
Several things can contribute to overheating. If the vehicle doesn't overheat at idle but slowly begins to overheat at highway speeds then I would suspect a partially plugged radiator that just simply can't get rid of the extra heat generated at higher engine loads and speeds. The radiator could be plugged internally which would require it's removal and professional cleaning [or replacement] or it could be plugged externally with bugs, dirt, and other crud that is restricting the airflow through it which can usually be fixed by thoroughly cleaning both sides of the radiator with a garden hose. If, however, the engine runs at near normal temps at highway speeds but overheats at lower speeds then I would look at the radiator cooling fan operation. Once you are above about 35 mph there is sufficient air being rammed through the radiator to cool it but below this the cooling fan[s] need to work to limit how warm the coolant can get. A more rare cause could be a leaking head gasket which often will cause a random sudden overheat condition [often with a loss of heat from the heater during the event] that initially may come and go for several days or weeks before becoming severe. Make sure your cooling system is properly filled with a mix of 50/50 coolant and water and hasn't accidentally been filled with only 100% antifreeze and this too will cause odd heating problems.
1988 wagoneer electrical issue
I believe that your headlightsw are powered by a fusable link, likely connected near the alternator or battery, I't's possible that the wire may have dropped and did not get re-connected when you installed the alternator, or it was weak and failed while you were working.. I don't see why it would cause the aternator to not charge but either it also completes the battery circuit or there is a second wire.
1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with very squirrly steering
If your steering box is in the same place mine is, the adjustment is hidden under the radiator shroud.Generally this will remove a bit of steering play but it has to be done carefully to avoid binding.
What you really need to do is to check the entire front end for any play. Remember that "acceptable" play in one component when added to "acceptable" play in several other components = unacceptable overall play. All bushings, joints etc must be checked. Shocks need to be in good condition as well. If everything is in good condition, find a good alignment shop and ask them if it's possible to add a few degrees of positive caster to your present settings. If you have adjustment for this it will help to keep it going straight at speed. (may make turns a bit harder but with p/s it should not be noticed.
good luck
Vehicle dies out
It could be either one it could also be the catalytic convertor
