1989 Isuzu Trooper starts but shuts off
It is the ballast resistor gone open circuit, the coil is 9volt and when you crank the solenoid on the starter puts full battery voltage across the coil (while cranking it will be nearer 9 volts) when running the resistor drops the 12 volts down to 9, they are made of special wire that will not solder or weld so the wire is riveted, with age and corrosion the joint fails, a auto parts supplier will get you a new on, usually they are by the coil, a ceramic block about the size of a thumb.

Check for spark at the spark-plugs the next time it dies on you--you will need an assistance with you.
If you have no spark than you may have a bad magnetic pick-up in the disributor--I am assuming that it has a disributor.
Or if that 's good than check for fuel pressure--may have a bad fuel pump or relay.
Proper ccamchaft and crankshaft alignment
4 cyl???? the crank has a mark approx 12 oclock, and the cam has a mark with a mark on th ecover approx 12-1 oclock. the dowel pin on th ecam will be straight up 12 o clock.

Not getting fuel through the system
Is the fuel pump operating? If the fuel pump is operating then change the fuel filter. If the fuel pump is not working, then check the relay. Hope this helped.
