Black soot in throttle body

Usually the throttle body sucks air in and soot from the engine won't come up the other way. Check that the air filter is clean and that the housing doesn't have any leaks in it that would allow dirty air to bypass the filter.

Both brake lights and 3rd light in back window

it can be a few problems but i would start by checking the fuses. after that look under the dash where the brake pedal is. you will see a switch there that toggles on when you apply the brakes. i have to mention one other thing because i've had experience with it. check to make sure the bulbs are good. unless your car is equipped with a warning system or you check the brake lights often they may all be burned out over a period of time without you knowing it. a small trick to that is whenever you are backing up or near a something that you can see the back of your vehicle... apply the brakes... if you don't see lights on one or both sides it's time to start changing bulbs.
the tail lights working is independent of the brake lights as generally if it's the same bulb it will have two filiments.

[email protected] I turn the headlights

Try swapping the relays and see if it solves the problem. Other than that have the terminal inspected for corrosion and the wiring for loose connection or exposed conductors and wires that may have gone bad.

How safe is it to

A blinking Check Engine Light indicates that you have a missfire on one or more cylinders. yYou really shouldn't drive it untill you get it fixed because this can cause damage to your Catalytic Converters, and they are VERY expensive to replace.

The a/c is cooling the

you have a vacuum leak between the engine and the control head for the a/c controls. Sometimes the vacuum harness does not fit tight to the back of the head. I have used plastic tie straps to hold it tight. Also, sometimes the little valves in the control head leak. Gino on ebay repairs them for $150.

I have pictures but they are 2 mb and won't go here.

I also posted an info file on fixya too.

I have a 2005 Mercury

look under by your brake pedal, there is a switch that has two wires to it, make sure plug has not been knocked off, if it is intact, check to see that one of the two wires have power,
if you have power, fuses are ok, jump the two wires and check to see if your brake light are on!
if they now work, you need a brake switch,
if you do not have power then you need to check your fuses..

i have seen many times that the connector gets bumped and makes a poor connection

good luck and hope this helps

Car is hard to steer

The problem that you are expierencing may be coming from you'r rack and pinion. This device works like a shock that has oil and hydrolics that use powersteering fluid pressure to help you'r vehicle turn easier. You mentioned that the fluid was ok, but just to be on the safe side you may want to look underneath to see if the rack itself is leaking anywhere on it. Another cause may be associated with the powersteering pulley, which if not working will cause there to be no powersteering at all so you can most likely knock that possibility out of the way. The rack and pinion or possible gear box may be the most likely of the two that can be causing the problem.

Hope this Helps!

I need instructions on how to change the headlamp

To remove first you want to remove the headlight door mounting screws and remove the headlight door. Then you want to remove the 4 retainer ring screws and remove the retainer ring from the headlight. Then you want to pull the headlight bulb forward and detach the wiring connector.

To install you first want to a
ttach the wiring connector to the headlight bulb and place the bulb in position, locating the bulb glass tabs in the positioning slots. Then you will attach the bulb retainer ring to the assembly with the retainer ring screws. Then you will install the headlight door and secure with the screws. Then you will check the headlight bulb aim and adjust as necessary

Let me know if this helps you.
