I suggest having the steering and front suspension systems checked, including: ball joints, tie rod ends, steering dampener (if equipped), upper and lower control arm bushings, hub bearings. I would also have the U-joints and motor mounts inspected in the process.

Is it a automatic or standard if it is an auto.I would check the modulator valve on the trans,pull the vaccum line off and check for trans fluid in the line.

Water is getting into your exhaust possibly from blown head gasket or cracked head.

Well a standard shift model would have a switch on the clutch not the trans. The engine would not crank if the clutch switch was faulty.A standard shift trans would have a backup light switch.

The 4JX1 engine is a diesel and you may have trouble finding the distributor or even the right hand bank of cylinders since it is a 4 cylinder motor. You will need a service manual to time the camshafts and make sure you use 5W40 oil as anything thicker will cause poor starting when cold. I had a Holden Jackeroo from hell and it suffered 2 engine runaways due to bad injector seals,multiple faulty sensors, a failed dual mass flywheel, and a broken oi lpickup in the sump. Get it running and get rid of it!

I would start with the crank angle sensor.

I have a 2000 Isuzu Trooper that had a PO401 code that would reset and then 2 miles later the light was on again - I found if you remove the EGR valve and start the engine that the engine should idle rough - If it doesnt and you have vacumn at the intake port spray carb cleaner down the port slowly and see how long it takes for the engine to run rough - Keep spraying till the engine dies and spray some more down the passage and let the engine set for 5 minutes and then restart the engine - it will run rough at first but clear out - you should be able to feel the engine RPM change when you put your finger over the intake vaccumn port for the egr - If not then repeat the cleaning method again - If you do feel the rpm change then put the egr valve back on and clear the code and run your drive cycle to see if it is fixed.

I had a similar issue with my lincoln, it turned out to be the wiring to the socket, was corroded and broken. Since you have done the other things this would be the next plausable place to look. hope this helps
