Do not top off tank when fueling. Had this problem and realized that it occured when I topped up after the pump shut off. No problem since. Feel that when topping up, you overfill the tank and fuel gets in the vent line and charcoal filter which somehow affects the fuel gauge. I have a 99 Z3 coupe.

see about a tune up and reset the computer on it..

be checking transmission fluid levels.. fill to full if low.. also look for contaminated fluid.. may need a fluid and filter change..

run fault codes for problems with accelerator position sensor--MAF and MAP problems.
