If the numbers are still working, it may just be a bulb. Get a kid to go under the dash and see if he can see the back of the console. It will be plastic with wires going to various places in it. Those places usually are the lights. Figuring out which is the right place takes communication and time. With the parking lites on, the bulb that is not lit in the likely place is probably the one you're looking for.

Odometer indicator not working for
You do not need to replace the instrument cluster! The fix for this is a pack of resistors that you can buy for $1.00 or less. Take the cluster right out and you'll see 4 resistors in the upper-right area on the back of the cluster. You can probably pick them off with your finger, they'll be so worn out. Once those are off, solder new ones on (carefully, don't burn your circuit board) and reassemble the dash board.
I fixed the odometer/gear selector light on my 2001 Century this way and there are videos on youtube that will walk you through the whole process.

the gear on the flywheel has worn. the engine stops in one of four spots in the rotation 'cause the cylinder pressure is building. That means the starter has not got the whole flywheel, but only a few teeth in four spots that is starts on every single time. these teeth wear out, then the starter motor cog cant turn the flywheel and you get the screech like you tried to change a stick shift without the clutch!if you do have a stick shift, then you can park on a slight hill, and roll just a bit with the clutch half out, which will rotate the engine and give the starter motor fresh teeth to work on.in short, yes, you need a mechanic.....
