2000 Ford Escort 2.0liter Split Port engine fuel injected, Car wont start and it backfires alot while trying to start. It will however start if I use starter fluid and it will run for awhile but th
First, I highly recommend that you stop using starter fluid. That stuff can do some pretty severe damage to your engine, engine sensors, and exhaust system...ESPECIALLY if it is backfiring while trying to start. If the engine will not start without starter fluid, there is a problem that needs to be PROPERLY diagnosed. Starter fluid is only good for making many problems worse. There are those that would disagree with this. However, this is my professional, ASE Certified Master Automobile Technician with 37 years of experience, opinion....Take it as you will.If it is backfiring, it has to be a valve or valve timing issue. I think I would start by checking the cam timing and see if the timing belt has gotten out of time for one reason or another. Those engines (Ford 1.8L, 1.9L and 2.0L) are also notorious for dropping exhaust valve seats, I would also recommend doing a compression test on all cylinders to see if there could be a burned valve or broken/missing valve seat.

i would say your looking at a faulty cam shaft sensor..its located on front side of engine. this fixed the same problem i had..there are 2 sensors one being your cam shaft sensor (normal to go out) and the crank shaft sensor..these work inline with computer to determine correct timing.hope this helps
Location of engine coolant temperature sensor
Automobiles: 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 4-cylinder 2.0L MFI DOHCNOTEThe "left" side of the engine is the driver's side. The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor (a device which changes resistance or voltage as temperature changes). The sensor detects the temperature of engine coolant and provides a corresponding signal to the PCM (Powertrain Control Module - aka "the car's computer").The ECT sensor is mounted in the following locations (small Ford engines):1.8L engines: in the cylinder head1.9L engines: threaded into the heater hose inlet pipe2.0L engines: at the left rear of the engine2.0L Zetec Engine (1) Partially drain the engine cooling system using a clean container. If coolant is in good condition, retain for reuse. (2) Disconnect the battery ground cable. (3) Disconnect the electrical wiring connector from the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. (4) Remove the retaining clip and the ECT sensor.
Fig. 1 Escort ZX2 ECT sensor - The retaining clip is removed (at the solid arrow). Withdraw ECT sensor by gently wiggling/pulling in the direction of the dashed arrow. To install:NOTECoat the ECT sensor O-ring with clean coolant prior to installation. (1) Replace the retaining clip and the ECT sensor. (2) Connect the electrical wiring connector from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. (3) Connect the battery ground cable. (4) Refill the engine cooling system. An inexpensive plastic "Radiator Funnel" will help with this task.
2000 ford escort over heats, and no heat .
try replacing thermostat and do a coolant flush, heater matrix behind dash is prone to blockage or leakeage ( with leakage usually footwells are always damp ) before you replace the coolant after flush, fill and drain with water a couple of times, should sort it and it easier than replacing heater matrix. if heater has not been working for a while, as in 12 / 18 months matrix replacement might be only option, but spending a couple of quid on flush is worth a try first
My 2000 Ford Escort runs
try replacing the thermostat, also if the heater in the car is not getting that warm also do a coolant flush. both jobs are not that difficult to do. should take about an hour ( not including bacon sandwich and a brew lol )
Battery light on - steering
My gut reaction is you have a slipping or a missing belt. Belts drive both the alternator (no power = battery light on) and hard to steer (belt drives power steering pump).
Open the hood and check it out.
I can't find the oxygen
Open the hood and look straight down between the cooling fans and the catalytic converter..It takes a 7/8 wrench to remove it...Plus you have to unplug it
Rear lights including brake lights just stopped
There could be a problem with the turn signal lever switch. Power is routed thru the switch to the tail / brake lamps. Also in this power "loop" is the brake light switch, try the following:
Look under the dash, on the brake pedal arm. There are one or two switches that activate brake lights and/or shift unlock. Check for loose mounting nut or a missing rubber nubber. Is the brake pedal coming all the way back up? Look on the floor for something not usually found there. These switches are adjustable and it may be as simple as adjusting them. Have a helper look for brake lights on and shift lever unlocked while you push and release the switches with your finger. Depress the brake pedal to get it out of the way. Remember to set the park brake first. Could just be a bad switch or loose connector. Check fuses and the bulbs.
