Hi,
Please follow the step by step solution given below carefully:
Tools:
10mm box end wrench ratchet handle 10mm socket 10mm deep socket (much easier for one bolt) 1/2" socket 13mm box end wrench tire ramps or a floor jack with stands
1. Jack up car and disconnect the negative (black) battery cable. use 10mm wrench to loosen terminal clamp.
2. Remove the 5 or six dust shroud bolts on the passenger side, 10mm socket, set dust shroud aside.
3. Remove the 2 hanging bolts on the coolant resivoir (the deep socket and a extension bar are helpful here) set the resivoir (with tubing still attached) aside.
4. Now you can easily get to the accessory belt. Follow the procedure on this (http://www.rldassociates.com/zx2/howto/belt.htm) page to get the v-ribbed belt off.
5. Remove the two molex plugs, use a flat head screwdrive to lift the catches on these plugs. Just below these two, locate the positive lead from the alt. it has a soft red cap. Use the 10mm socket to take it off.
6. There are 3 gold tone mounting bolts for the alternator, 1 up top, 2 underneath, use the 1/2" to take off the bottom two and then support the alt. while you take out the top one.
7. Its free! It might take a little rotation to get it out past the lines.
8. Hang onto the junk alternator, it fetches a core charge for up to 75$ Autozone will sell you another one for 109 plus tax (with the old one)
9. Retrace your steps with the new one and your off.
GOOD LUCK!
Why wont my escort accelerate very well?
Could do with some more pointers but :
Check valve clearances, could be tight and not allowing a good enough 'bang'.
Distrbutor bolts might have come loose and it's running retarded ignition timing. Check and run a little more advance - Haynes manual will show you what to do here.
Brakes binding?
Tyres inflated properly?
Air filter dirty?
Oil and oil filter not changed for ages?

It's too difficult to describe in words alone, and there are variables such as power steering and air conditioning which will alter the routing. You need photos and diagrams, but the ones which are available are copyright material so can't be posted on FixYa.
I respectfully suggest that you buy a Haynes Manual from either Amazon, eBay or your local car parts store. It's not expensive and will pay for itself with the very first repair.
Why does my ford escort give a grinding noise fro
Your brake squealers are rubbing, telling you it is time to change the pads before they wear down the rotors. If that isn't the sound you got then the bearing is shot and you have less time to fix it because it will weld itself to the spindle and you will have to replace more parts. Hope this helps.
Engine dieing
Sounds like bad carbon build up, have you tryed using fuel injection cleaner yet? Because of the buildup, I would suggest putting it in with only a half a tank (to get a higher concentration of cleaner vers fuel). Once in, run it down the highway (the cleaner works best when the engine is hot) until you are almost out of gas, then fill it up and add another bottle of injector cleaner (alway add the injector cleaner after filling as the cleaner will foam if added before and this will lead to gas spillage at the pumps). Run the car normally. If it is just carbon, by you next tank of gas the problem should be solved. As pervention, I recomend using fuel injection cleaner every 4 tank fulls (for most people it works out to about once a month).
Cyl.1-2-3 misfiring
Did you get the wire on in the right spot? The coil should be marked for which cylinders they go to.
