TAKE OUT THE THROTLE CONTROL VALVE LOCATED AT THE BYPASS HOSE CLEAN IT.IF PROBLEM PERSISTS CKECK IF U HAVE POWER ON ONE OF THE TWO CABLES!!BE CAREFULL CHEC WITH A MULTIMETER!!!!!RED TO CABLE AND BLACK TO BATTERY GROUND.IF OK THEN REPLACE THE VALVE.
On a 1988 volkswagon is
FUEL FILTER FOR THE VOLKSWAGEN LOCATED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.IF CARBURETED, IF YOU HAVE FUEL INJECTION FUEL FILTER LOCATED IN THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY MOUNTED UNDER THE VECHICLE IN FRONT OF THE FUEL TANK.
How does the feul pump relay works?

The fuel pump relay regulates the power given to the fuel pump. If the fuel pump relay is faulty there will be no power to the fuel pump and will result to fuel supply failure. These relays just like the others serves as regulators so that the battery will not fail during electrical loads.

Remove the wiper arm. Switch on the wipers for a 15 seconds or so then switch them off and allow the wiper motor to reach the "Park" position. Re-fit the wiper arm/blade so the blade sits an inch or 2 from the lower edge of the windscreen.
Pour some water on the screen or use the screenwashers and try the wipers to see if they still travel beyond the edge of the screen. Small adjustments can be made by lowering the arm towards the bottom edge of the screen by a couple of splines on the shaft. If it still travels beyond the edge of the screen then you may need a replacement linkage as it could be worn. You may be able to buy the linkage only and use your existing motor-I know this is possible with the Sharan but not sure on your model/year.

judging by the amount of km it has done i would say the rpm drive is faulty, this measures the amount of rotation in the camshaft and shows the "revolutions per minute". when this goes faulty it stops the read out on the dial, so you want to be looking for a device that measures the speed that the engine is turning, if you have, replace it and it should solve the problem

you want to look for the original airbox (where the air filter is) first and find the clamp that connects the pipe to the box, loosen the clamp and remove the box and then see if the air filter fits, if not then take the pipe off so you can see the intake or carb entrance put the air filter on there and that should do it

For the mileage display, it's probably just a service reminder. Does your mileage come up when you press the button once? Or try resetting by holding the button in for a few seconds. The cutting out could be time for a tune up, adjustment of your idle speed, new fuel filter, or leaking vacumm hoses. Those are the easiest places to start. Could also be low fuel pressure or emission system problems, but hopefully you won't have to go there. If check engine light isn't on, it probably isn't emissions.
