you should check fuel pump and spark first..

is there is a smoke from tail pipe?is the automatic gearbox keep change ratios and works normal ?is there is any strange sounds from engine ?your car is old what about the engine condition ?have you checked water and oil levels and colors ? could be electric problem could be spark plugs if the car is keep shaking in idle

sounds like a wiring problem or short,check with tester.if wiring is alright check your brake switch normally on or near the brake pedal as this can be defective.

Have to know, how to bend and flair tubing, and have the necessary tools.

I agree with your friend. It sounds like a blown head gasket to me, too.
