It's called the clutch start switch. Yes, it could be bad or needs adjustment. Push the clutch in and the switch closes contact, so power flows from the ignition switch start position to the clutch switch and on to the starter motor-well, actually to the starter solenoid on the starter motor. If you have a voltmeter or test light, you can test the clutch switch . A red and white wire to it and a red wire from the switch to the starter solenoid. When this wire gets to the solenoid, it is a black wire with red stripe. It should have voltage when key is held in start position and the clutch pedal is depressed.

It's possible the timing belt has broken. Has it ever been replaced? (This isn't the serpentine belt that you see in front of the engine; the timing belt is located inside the front engine cover where you can't see it.) If that's the problem, make sure that the engine hasn't been damaged before spending big bucks to have the belt replaced. (In some engines, when the timing belt breaks, the pistons can damage the valves. If your car has an engine like that, it may not be worth repairing.)

Sounds like the clutch friction plate was on the way out when you bought the car. The smell you mentioned was probably from the clutch plate slipping. You need someone knowledgeable to check the linkage is correctly set up and advise if a new clutch plate is required.

Your symptoms are different to your explanation. Shift solenoid issue would create shifting problems ... you would hear the engine over revving when the car should shift to the next gear ... or holding too long in a gear before shifting to the next. If this is what's happening, before going at the trans with solenoids pull the dipstick and check the oil, it should be a clean red color ... if brown or black change the oil ... it may be burnt and not doing it's job correctly causing slip. Beware of quick oil change places they do not use the correct oil ..especially in Foreign cars. Hope this helps Sam

whats the oil look like and oil pressure --was their any sludge when you changed tappets --sludged up engine channels can restrict oil return and cause oil starvation same with old oil thins out when warm and oil filter clogged or collasp

My brothers 2000 ford ranger the fuse went out to the speed sensor. I change the speed sensor because it did not shift out of 1st gear and the speedometer stopped working. I then found out the fuse was missing in the fuse panel. My brother could not tell where the fuse went but when I put a fuse in it started shifting and the speedometer started working. everything was good. You should have a code if it is the speed sensor.
