From your description it could be fuel or ignition. Ignition is usually easier to start with and only checking the spark power and quality as the engine dies will indicate what is happening - if anything.

Dependent on what year you have. If it has an idle speed motor that could be cleaned as well as the throttle body. Idle speed motor may need to be replaced sometimes a good cleaning hooks them right up.
CAR GOES INTO DRIVE BUT DOES NOT SHIFT OUT. WILL NOT EXCEED 35 MPH
Unscrew the wing nut on your air breather and lift it off. On the driver side of the car, on the side of the throttle body there is a bar/linkage that comes up from the side of the transmission that is supposed to be connected to the throttle body by a small plastic bushing/grommet fastener. As they age, they break off and will cause this delayed shifting. If you drive it hard enough it will eventually shift (35-40 mph) out of first gear. Probably wont shift out of second until closer to 65-70 mph. Same thing happened to me. I thought geeze this thing is not going to shift but it will. Should be a simple fix.
Transmission jerks on 1985 Crown Vic when cold.
Unless you are low on fluid, I suspect you are in need of a rebuild. I have had similar problems before. Any shop will tell you to try a fluid and filter change. It has never brought one of mine back. I would suggest adding fluid to the top of the 'add fluid' area of the dipstick and no more. It can foam if it is to full, causing similar problems as being to low. I would add that if you have to replace the transmission - you need to consider that the car may not be worth the cost.
Good Luck.
