Temp gauge wont go up hard to start

most likely the temp sensor is bad that would make the car start hard by adding to much fuel and also would make the gauge not work. it is easy to change by unscrewing the old sensor that is located in the end of the cylinder head.

While driving at 60mph engine quit after

It sounds like you need new piston rings. Cylinder compression for a 1997-2002 Ford Escort from the factory is about 200 PSI. 180 through 200 PSI is good, below 180 usually means the Piston Rings are worn or a possible crack in the engine case. If your going to have to take the engine apart to replace the rings, you might as well have the engine overhauled (replace everything while it's apart). Usually the overhaul interval is every 250,000 Miles or sooner. Something you may want to try if you need the car to last a bit longer, try one of those additives that are suppose to help improve commression that you add to your oil, they should sell it in the automotive section at Walmart, though it's very likely that it will not work.

Another simple test to verify everything is a Drop-Down (differential pressure) test, you can buy a drop-down tester at Harbor Freight. You use an air compressor to compress your cyliners with this and you remove your oil cap and listen for leaks. Most of the time air will leak past the piston rings, but with this test you can also check for cracks in your engine case. This should verify if it's the rings or not.

Change fuel filter 2002 escort...

The fuel filter is most likely on the firewall. It has two plastic clips (one on each end) that hold the hoses on. Pull out the clips and it should be easy to do the rest.

Trying to replace both oxygen

The "Before" CAT O2 sensor is easy, just remove the exhaust heat shield and you should have enough space to get to it. The "After" CAT O2 Sensor is a bit harder; I found the easiest way to do that is to remove the right wheel and it will expose an opening that you can reach through to break it loose.

Why is there tension on

If it became stiff over time, the most reasonable thing to assume is a problem with the Power Steering System: Check the fluid level, if that's fine then the power steering pump may be failing. Before you waste your money on a garage repair, try flushing your old power steering fluid by removing the bottom hose to drain the fluid or use a pressure evacuator to remove it, then put the hose back on and refill it with your engine running in order to turn the pump and run the fliud through. If all else fails, replace the pump.
If your steering become stiff for just a moment while your driving, your pump can be failing just like above. Have it inspected before your replace it.

At how many miles should i change my timing belt?

According to the 1997-2002 Ford Escort Manual the average replacement interval is every 60,000 Miles (96,000 Kilometers). I unfortunately procrastinated and my timing belt snapped at 109,000 Miles and I had to go to the junk yard for a new engine. I had to replace a whole engine for not replacing a $15.00 belt.

Timing belt problems are common with the Ford Escort, mine went, without warning, at 50,000 mi. When your ready to replace it, have the water pump replaced at the same time, it'll save you $$$ in the long run.
