There is a master and slave cylinder that are either out of fluid or bad. Check the reservoir and make sure it is full. As far as the "pastic chips" I do not know what they are other than maybe a plastic bushing.
Please let me know what you find.
VW Golf Mk4 1.4 16v Oil Light Warning on Dash
Measure your oil at normal operating temp, without the engine running of course. This will give you a more accurate reading once the oil has circulated in the system.
The system works like this:
- With the ignition on, the oil pressure indicator light on the dash should come on and flash. Once the engine is started, the light should go out and stay out as long as the engine is running.
- If the oil pressure drops below approximately 0.3 bar or 5 psi when the engine is running below 2000 rpm, the light will flash.
- If the oil pressure drops below approximately 1.8 bar or 27 psi when the engine is running above 2000 rpm for more than 3 seconds, the indicator light will flash and the buzzer will sound.
If either this two warnings occur:
- The engine should be switched off immediately and the oil level should be checked.
1999 2L golf engine runs hot "coolant" in
Before you flush it, check to make sure your oil doesn't have coolant in it. From your description of your coolant, sounds like there's oil in it.. which is indication of a head gasket leak. Have it pressured tested first before doing your flush. Coolant shouldn't be "brown & thick"
Battery does not seem to
Sounds like the battery can no longer hold a charge and needs replacing but first have the alternator checked to make sure that is putting out a charge to your battery, most garages will do this test free of charge for you
Hope this helps

Dear sir, I am glad to share the experience. I had the same problem. At first I also thought it was the key that was faulty, I Went and bought new batteries, but it never worked. When a specialist checked, we found that the ignition system is the one that was faulty. When we replaced it (USD500.0), the problem was resolved. The only complication is that when you change the ignition system, the key and the steering lock which is always a set has to be replaced, the key need to be programmed with the computer in the car so that it works. So I wish you the best. Julius ouma, Kampala, Uganda. Julius.ouma@ gmail.com
I have a 1.6 golv IV. when i am driving and stop
The auto gearbox is a bit beyond me iam afraid as mainly manuals here and mostly diesels as well but the starting is caused by a faulty sensor ,on the front of the engine middle right is a water housing thats plastic ,in this housing are two sensors and the back one controls the auto choke operation so change this sensor and see what happens ,its only held in with a horseshoe shape clip so it comes out easy .the gearbox i would check teh fluid lever with engine running and then select reverse ,then check the oil level and see what it show as it wouldnt surprise me if its low on transmission fluid
Hi there,
The brake lights on
Almost certainly the brake light switch has failed, it's located just above the brake pedal. It's a small box unit with a plunger type switch. Get down into the footwell, and see if u can push the plunger in and out a few times, it might just be stuck. U can try given it a really (I MEAN REALLY LIGHT) light smearing of grease to help prevent it from sticking.
If you find the above cures it, then cool,
might aswell buy a new brake light switch as they are only £8 or so from VW, and u can easily fit it within 5mins yourself.
