You have at the very least a serious problem with misfiring. All of the above suggestions are possibilities, and sorting them out is a daunting task. Also consider possibility of serious slippage in the transmission (rpm surges and lack of pickup may be indicative). There are many things to check for this. You'll need a volt/ohm meter schematics and patience. I have the schematics for an 03, should be the same. You up to this??

If I remember correctly, that year Taurus still had the old style lock buttons by the window glass. You should be able to use a sharp object and dig into the plastic door lock by the window. Knife, box cutter, anything that will gouge the button enough to get a purchase to pull the lock up. Pull it up, open the door, then remove the door panel to find out what's wrong. Probably open circuit in the door wiring or broken clip for the rods. Ya could find someone with a slim-jim who knows how to hook the rod to unlock the door. Ford dealer? Locksmith?

Scan for codes stored ion the OBD computer. Many auto parts stores can do this for you at no charge. Based on the results - a complete tune up may be in order. Good luck!

Sounds like you may have a GEM module failure.It's one of Ford's operating modules that are super prone to do exactly what you describe, and at 13 years old, is not surprising

You simply have a burned out bulb or bulbs. With the key turned on turn on the directional for the left side and then the right side. Typically one bulb is blown and the opposite side works normally. Observe the normal side and note which is the flashing bulb. It is the flashing bulb on the other (malfunctioning) side that needs to be replaced. To replace the bulb you must remove the entire brakelight assembly, which isn't difficult. Open the trunk and locate the electrical harness that lines up with the brakelight assembly. Near the harness, locate the two (possibly three) nuts or wingnuts that attach the brakelight assembly to the car. Once the nuts are removed, the assembly can be pulled off the rear of the car. After replacing the bulb, be sure to test the operation of the new bulb before reassembling everthing.

Yes, to answer the question. Typically, when replacing, you will need to get new clips, as the ones holding it in will probably break. The stripping is probably not cheap, and if you want to, you can purchase the windshield glue (Get the wet dry stuff) and help seal it afterwards. Be careful, as I am not sure if those seals are lined with aluminum. Very hard to un-bend

the dashboard light dimmer function also also turns on the interior lights when turned all the way. turn the switch back a little and the interior should turn off.

It's probably a transmission issue - your overdrive may not be engaging. It's a common problem with these vehicles.

Sounds like your fuel supply is intermittent, check the fuel system, filter, etc.
