Driving a 1998 Ford explorer hearing a rattling noise upon start up and idle...someone mentioned lifters....what could this be? also I have a trip planned wondering if it is bad to drive the car and h

It is going to be practically impossible to diagnose the noise without hearing it and hearing where the noise originates. Take it to a shop (or two ? ) and get their opinion. I say 'or two' because some shops see a woman and say 'ka-ching.'

1998 idles too high at startup when cold SOHC 4.0 ford explorer

Try spraying carb/throttle body cleaner around the throttle body after the truck is warmed up all the way get someone to sit in the truck with it in drive and there foot on the brake if the idle raises there's a vacuum line leaking or your throttle body gasket is leaking if no increase in idle then thoroughly clean out the throttle body with the spray if it's very dirty inside the varnish from the fuel burning is causing the throttle plate to stick or stay open causing your engine to have increased rpms if your using no name brand gas stop now your killing your motor the major brands have detergents in the gas to keep things clean and better mpgs brands like usa Valero speedway delta liberty are all garbage and should only be used in an emergency situation like you're going to run out also if you are using this junk get 2 cans of Berrimans fuel system cleaner and put it in the gas tank every week for a month or so this will clean out the emissions and gas tank of the dirt and varnish from bad cheap gas I say 2 at a time because the super strength is needed to clean out the gunk and keep using it at least 1 can a month with good higher grade fuel 93 octane for about 2 months after then either stay at 93 or go to 91 or 89 not 87 ///// now the reason for the higher octane fuel is this the higher the octane level the slower the fuel burns and cleaner more efficient burning with the cleaner combination to get out the gunk your truck will run much better and mpgs will increase now post back with progress write down everything you've done and we will take it from there if the problem persists but I don't think so I'm a taxi mechanic in nyc.with 50 years experience so that's where the information is coming from and a lot of the cars have 300,000 to 450,000 miles on them so I would say you should listen to this advice they are ford crown Victorias and are original motors good luck stephen

I'm assuming you have Transfer Case -Automatic Four Wheel Drive (A4WD) An not Transfer Case -All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Two different system's . The automatic system is electroniclly controlled . When it has electrical problems it set DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's in the 4X4 control module . Before replacing part's or trying this an trying that , having the vehicle checked for DTC'S is always the first step in any diagnostic's with these vehicles . Then if not familiar with this system read factroy service repair information . Trying to fix not knowing what your doing never works . System Function Hall effect sensor monitors input and output shaft speed. In the A4WD (C-Trac) system, the GEM varies the torque sent to the front driveline by controlling the transfer case clutch. At rest and under cruising conditions, the GEM activates the transfer case clutch a minimum duty cycle (percentage of time the clutch is turned on), which allows for the slight difference between the front and rear driveshafts which normally occurs when negotiating a corner on dry pavement. Under any of the following conditions, the GEM will increase the duty cycle in order to prevent or control slip:
  • Slip is detected (by using the Hall Effect Sensors)
  • Heavy acceleration (throttle position).
Feature inputs:
  • Brake ON/OFF switch.
  • 4WD mode switch.
  • Digital transmission range sensor.
  • Clutch switch (manual transmission vehicles only).
  • Vehicle speed signal (transmitted from the ABS module).
  • Front/rear driveshaft speed sensors.
  • Throttle position information from the PCM.
  • Contact plate position inputs A, B, C, D.
Feature outputs:
  • Solid state clutch relay (pulse width modulated signal: grounded when relay is on, battery potential when relay is off).
  • A4WD indicator (ground when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
  • 4x4 shift motor relay outputs.
Shifts between A4WD and 4x4 HIGH can be made at any speed. Listed below are the inputs and outputs needed by the GEM to execute a change between any of these modes. Feature inputs:
  • Front/rear driveshaft speed sensor.
  • Vehicle speed signal.
  • Throttle position information.
  • 4WD mode switch.
Feature outputs:
  • Solid state clutch relay (pulse width modulated signal; grounded when relay is on, battery potential when relay is off).
  • 4x4 HIGH cluster indicator (ground when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
When shifting into or out of LOW range, the GEM requires that the vehicle speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake is applied, and the transmission is in NEUTRAL. Feature inputs:
  • Throttle position information.
  • 4WD mode switch.
  • Contact plate position inputs A, B, C, D.
  • Vehicle speed signal (transmitted from ABS module).
  • Brake ON/OFF switch input (battery voltage when brake is depressed, open circuit when not activated).
  • Digital transmission range sensor (ground when transmission is in NEUTRAL, open circuit otherwise).
  • Start/clutch depressed input (manual transmission only).
Feature outputs:
  • 4x4 shift motor relay outputs.
  • 4LOW cluster indicators (ground when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
  • Solid state clutch relay (pulse width modulated signal; grounded when relay is on, battery potential when relay is off).
  • The GEM they talk about is a generic electronic control module .
  • Do you know what DTC'S are ?

  • Your best bet , have it towed to a qualified repair shop . You have not the knoweldge or diagnostic equipment to fix it.

I just replaced the fuel pump. when i turn on the ignition i cant hear the fuel pump come on. you can drive down the road and all at once it will die, then u turn the key on and off a few time and it

When you turn the key to start, the PCM provides ground to the control coil side of the fuel pump relay to close the contacts to provide a 2-second prime. When you turn to start, it fully grounds the control coil and the contacts provide power to the pump. Swap the fuel pump relay with another relay of the same size and type and see if that helps. If it doesn't you've got a wiring issue and it's usually an intermittent ground. The ground for the fuel pump relay is behind the left front kick panel near driver's left foot

What will make my 1998 ford explorer turn over but not start. no fire in coil. we changed the coil and still no fire. checked all fuses, their fine. checked fuel pump- we can hear it kick on when key

Put key in IGN and turn to run. All warning lights should come on, including the check engine light. Then turn the key to crank. As the engine cranks and the crankshaft position sensor detects rotation and reports it to the PCM, the check engine light should go out. If it stays on, the PCM isn't getting input from the crankshaft postion sensor. Check the connection or replace the sensor.

it s a long shot, but put the explorer on jack stands start engine, put in neutral GENTLy tap on shift gear on transfer case while someone is pushing handle into high. tap gas to change RPM s while working it. put into drive and do the same but put transfer case into neutral, if goes into neutral stop and put transmission into neutral than put transfer case into high. keep in mind if it works don t take it out, or you will be doing all this again. have had shift cables break have someone shift while you try to change lever position. Might be worth having it checked , transfer case is not a transmission. senser, computer, fuses, solenoid relays are just some easy fixes for this problem..
