1997Ford F350 Diesel, Will not turn over, just one

Try jumping it, sounds like the battery can be dead. But there is a solenoid on the firewall I believe the left side inner fender (in the engine compartment) you can turn the ignition on and jump the two leads with a screwdriver and see if the motor turns over. Remember this is a huge motor with high compression and the glow plugs have to fire to start. Takes a lot of juice to get it going (thats why it has 2 batteries). Make sure you have charged batteries. If not charge/jump the truck. The starter can only be tested off the truck, a solenoid if bad only cost a few bucks ($20-$30) but they don't fail too often

tip

Easier starts in the cold temps.

If your getting hard or no starts in the winter/cold temps cycle the glow plugs 2-3 times. They are programmed to cycle up to 120 seconds or 2 minutes which in some cases isn't enough. Turn the key to ignition (not start) and allow the plugs to heat for about 90 seconds then back off again. Do this 2-3 times and your diesel should fire up. If extremely cold plug it in for an hour which should be enough to assist in starting.

Starter or solenoid

The Ford 7.3L diesel engines require a LOT of power to crank them over. The FIRST thing to check would be the battery and battery cables. If you are absolutely certain that these are in good condition, then you must check for power coming from the starter relay (mounted on the right fender apron) to the starter solenoid (part of the starter assembly)The "click" you are hearing is either the starter relay or the starter solenoid, or BOTH at the same time. If the starter relay is providing the correct power to the starter solenoid, then the starter assembly must be replaced. If the starter relay is not providing the correct power, then most likely the starter relay is bad.You just have to check for the proper current at the proper places and the problem will be found. Please note that your truck is also most likely equipped with 2 batteries. One battery being bad can cause BOTH of them to not work properly. So when you test your batteries, it is best to disconnect them and test each battery on its own merit.

1997 f350 7.5 engine, engine

Did you pull the PCM connector? See if the short goes away.

Pull the computer, the little box in the kick panel (I think), unplug it, plug in the 20 amp fuse and see if it blows. If it does, the problem is from the battery to the PCM feed or one of the powered circuits.

If it doesn't, the PCM is shorted internally. Lots of floating grounds under the hood of the tour to fool a meter. try to look some CD or Workshop Manual to check the right wiring diagrams from Ford. I've rewired cars that had melted harnesses and found lots of incorrect diagrams.

SUMMARY:
You either have a short in the power supply wiring to the PCM, or ain internal short in the PCM itself. Inspect the wiring, disconnect the PCM and turn the key on. If the fuse blows, the problem is in the wiring. If the fuse does not blow, the short is in the PCM.

Hope this helps.

The pump may still be weak due to lack of power. Remove the relay and inspect the terminals to where it is attached. There may be corrosion or the relay may be bad. These issues may prevent the pump to work correctly. Otherwise it could be a weak pump.
