Over heating
The most likely cause is a faulty thermostat. The location varies from car to car, but since you need to go to a parts store to get a replacement ask them where it is, they can usually pull up a picture right on their screen.
The thermostat is supposed to open the cooling line when the car gets up to temperature.

The break lights does' work. Everything else
Hello pcrobertson1
The issue could be a switch located at the brake pedal where the actual contact occurs to turn on the brake lights. If you've already done so you should try taking a look at that as well as your fuses.

That is the power booster for your brakes. It's controled by vacuum so you could possibly have a leak in the diaphram in there. Does your brake pedal seem hard when you push it? That is the sign of a bad power booster. No it really shouldn't hum so you are most likely looking at having to replace it in the near future if your pedal isn't hard yet. I hope this helps you and good luck. Almost forgot, check to make sure the vacuum hose is good and secure on there as this could be leaking as well.

What is the product number
The part number that you mentioned, "BX96-r" is a Motorcraft battery that is the original equipent (O.E.) for the '96 Ford Contour. There are aftermarket brands available that match or even exceed the specs of this battery. The actual "case size" is 96R. By staying with the mentioned case size, the dimensions of the replacement battery (the brand is irrelevant) will be identical to the original BX96-R. Make sure that the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) and Reserve Capacity (RC) at at least equal or more than the battery you are replacing.

On my 1996 Ford Contour.
Hi, it is difficult to measure the draw in voltage. It is obviously best to measure amps. A better way to do this, assuming you don't have a high current ammeter, is to use a test light. The brightness of the test light connected between the battery and the cable indicates the amperage of the draw. With the test light in place, try removing the fuses again. If none of the fuses will extinguish the light or dim it significantly, the draw has to be on an unfused circuit. I will look up your wiring diagram to find the unfused circuits and add that information in a few minutes.

The battery is dead and the car is in the garage
YOU NEED BATTERY POWER TO ENERGIZE THE BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK SOLENOID TO SHIFT TRANSMISSION TO ANY GEAR.TRY USING A JUMPER BOOSTER BATTERY TO POWER CAR UP ENOUGH TO SHIFT IT OUT OF PARK TO MOVE IT.

Car idles fine when comming
There may be lots of reasons a car stalls at intersections, but one that most people wouldn't think of is low automatic transmission fluid levels. Be sure to check the fluid when parked on a level surface. Do your best to not allow any lint or dirt to contaminate the dip stick before reinserting.
While not directly related, maintenance cycles for replacing transmission fluid and filter vary, but should be performed as suggested by the vehicle maker. Paying for a power flush may be worth it if you can afford it, but it's not essential. The most important part is changing it on schedule. The 5% of residue left behind will mean your 95% new fluid is being put to work.
Your gas may contain too much moisture. A clear plastic approved gas container filled and let sit for a few minutes, or upto 24 hours will collect moisture at the bottom (water is more dense then fuel). Name brand Heat and similar additives can evaporate water from the fuel. In some infrequent circumstances, a distributor coil may be cracked. A clogged, dirty or old fuel filter or fuel pump can be another cause. Another cause is your car's vacuum hose may be damaged and leaking, which may cause the engine to lose power.
The car may be just idling too low which can be adjusted very easily with a screwdriver. There is a small screw on the throttle body where the throttle cable connects to it you can adjust the screw to make the car idle smoother.

Removal of control arm on
Just did this last week. Repair manual says to disconnect exhaust, power steering lines, shift linkage (manual), support engine, unbolt from subframe, then lower subframe. I said bull. I merely cut the two bolts in the front and went to my local u-pull it for the 2 bolts. When I installed them, I went up from underneath and put the nuts on the top. The back 2 remained the same.

Temperature gauge not working or starts to work
You;ll need to locate the temperature sending unit and replace it. It will be screwed into the engine block or more likely the intake manifold where there is a water jacket. This should be a simple job as you just unhook the electrical plug connected to it, replace it and reconnect the connector.

Where is the speed sensor on a ford contour
REPLACE SPEED SENSOR IN 1996 FORD CONTOUR
(For Zetec 2.0L) Set parking brake, jack up car on front driver side. Remove Drivers side front wheel. Crawl under car by firewall. Look up on transmission (mid vehicle), you should see the bottom of the VSS as it screws into the top of the transmission - loosen VSS (turn 1/4 turn). Open hood, Disconnect neg cable from battery (safety first) remove 3 long bolts holding down air intake over throttlebody. Unclip air filter top cover. Disconnect MAF connector. Lift off entire top air assembly, disconnect IAT sensor from under intake tube by MAF and put whole assembly away. You need to remove the rest of the Airbox, close to the firewall is a rubber band O ring holding down airbox, unhook. Then Pull up on airbox. You need to pull hard, it is held on by pins that push through rubber donuts on each side of the box. When it comes off it'll make a huge pop and you'll swear you've broken something - you likely haven't. (It's super easy to put back, just push down - hard to remove though). With airbox off, you will see large wire harness, follow it back - as it reaches under the brake booster and throttlebody, you will see a small offshoot with a connector - that is the VSS connector. Even though it's fairly easy to see it's a PITA to unhook. One-handed shennanigans, and some cursing required. Some small hands or really long needle nose pliers would help. Be careful, don't mess up the harness/connector side. When it's disconencted, go back under car and unscrew VSS and pull up. Then install new VSS. Reconnect nrew VSS to harness connector - hard again but not as bad as disconnecting. Then put everthing back together in reverse

Hey my rear lights have all of a suden stopped
Check your fuses (open the kick panel above accelerator pedal to access) If it's not a fuse you can get a test light for a few bucks at supercheap/repco etc.It has a needle which you push through the plastic coating on your wires to see if power is there.Try working backwards from there to check for broken wiring.
