1996 VW Passat - Random cylinder miss fire, worse
Pop the heed, see the air box on the very left? On top of that box is the Ignition Control Unit. Little black square w/ winds about 1/2"
thick....
That is the problem. Or Your MAF sensor...
I don't know how to chech the Ignition Control Unit with out the proper tester.
But the MAF is located directly below in side the box.
If you POP off the large hose that comes out of the front of the air box. You can see the MAF, spreay it some contact cleaner for electronics not BREAK CLEANER>>>>>>.

Not apassat 1996 wrong car. for a 99 jetta no
one thing to do when you have no communication is after you visualy check grounds and wiring then do this unplug each engine sensor one at a time each time try to use the scanner when it does you will have found the bad sensor and the problem. otherwise its time to have pcm checked. but when a sensor goes bad sometimes due to grounding out it will not allow car to communicate but unplugging them one at a time and trying to communicate will locate the bad one start with them crank sensor.
No communcation odb2 connector
You may want to try to disconnect the ABS module before trying to communicate again. I would assume that the car is running. If it is a check on the terminals if it ok and the wiring.
There are instances where the software does not do the handshake with the ECU. If you can borrow other scanners just to test.
96 VW Passat transmission problem
i have the exact same problem like you
i just had mine in the shop for the full tune up,including the transmision oil, filter, gasket ect...i've been told to put some automatic transmision conditioner which helped a bit but it was still the same thing.
i've been told it's some kinda clutches inside the tranny that are worn down
im getting my tranny replaced
btw mine's automatic just like yours
Over heating
overheating can be caused by thermostat stuck open or cooling fan not working . . can also be caused by low coolant level or defective or blown head gasket
VW Polo 1998 Model runs fine for about 5 km
check all vacume hoses for splits.this sounds also like air being drawn from the fuel tank sender unit which could be corroded.is there a strong smell of fuel inside the car?this could also be a secondary jet being blocked in the carb if it has one.good luck
1996 Passat Fuse box Diagram
Have you double checked the electronic switch type thermistat mounted on the radiator that senses the temperature of the anti freeze. You can jumper around the switch while the car is started and the fan should start running (watch your fingers).
Keys no longer work
sounds like it has some wiring issues with the ignition...the wires were loose before thus the intermittent starts....now the wires are completely broken and no longer making contact... i'd recommend getting a new ignition switch...the wires would have to be loose in that little mechanism. It is completely enclosed so you can't service the switch itself. Getting to it requires the removal of the steering wheel and column with column accessories. hope this helps with ID'ing the problem.

1996 vw polo overheating
Check radiator for coolant (directly, not just from refill reservoir).
Remove thermostat temporarily for troubleshooting.
Check radiator fan operation.
Check for water in oil=blown head.
Vw polo driveshaft torx splines problems
Hi Ammar
If your torx bolt splines are shot.
Hammer on the surface face, with a long round drift to loosen the bolt threads slightly, and close up the torx hole, and try the torx splined socket again.
If no good try mole grips on the head of the bolt to loosen it.
If not enough room for them, try a chisel on the outer edge of the bolt, this normally does it.
Failing this try hammering on a slightly smaller external socket, than the head of the bolt, then try removing.
Good Luck !
Let me know how you get on.
A FixYa rating would be nice !

Rear door won't open
this is fairly common i,m afraid and there is no easy solution.:(......the lock mechanism siezes up you can try banging the door just below the hanldle while you cycle the central locking it sometimes releases it,otherwise you have to pull door panel off and then remove window regulator with the door stuck shut.then you need to basically destroy the lock with a hammer and bar to get it to release.this is not a easy job .i would recomend vw specialist or main dealer.sorry to be the bearer of bad news.hope you get on ok.
Location of the obd2 connection on my 1996 Passat
I have a 96 TDI (diesel) passat. The Connection is in front of the main dash board just in front of the wiper "hand" You need to pull a little piece of plastic tha has a tiny "speaker" looking grill on it. Be careful when you pull this out not to bust the wiper selector handle...
