The battery was disconnected, so now the radio is in SAFE mode. The woman who owned the car before me gave me a note with info on how to take it off safe mode but it doesn't seem to be working since its still in safe mode. The note said to hold down mode and scan at the same time until "safe" is no longer on the screen then it when on to say certain numbers to push but her writing was hard to read. When i tried holding down mode and scan the screen blinked "safe" then nothing. I would really like to have a radio again please help me in fixing this problem.
Thanks so much
Lia
Hey.. i just had the same thing happen... bought a 1994 Jetta.. radio in safe mode... so i went online and found out.. hold scan mode and the arrows after your preset station button.. then after like 3 secs or so you'll see " 000" on the display.. use the preset buttons.. 1,2,3, and 4 to change the display to enter your code :D if you lost your code go to VW dealer and pull radio out and see service center .. carry VIN code in as well and they can look up your code.. takes like 5 mins and is FREE,,, man i love that word :D

Battery is good. When ignition is turned on, the odometer screen in the dash gives the reading IN 02, and when you turn the key to start the car, nothing happens. No clicks. All electronics seem to work fine when the ignition is turned on.
Help?
I had the same problem with my 94 jetta, I would also have the alarm turn on as I connected the battery, if you lower the fuse box being careful not to disconnect anything, there is a box to the upper driver-side aria(that is if you are laying on your back looking up under the dash) this is the alarm control unit, there should be a white label on the wires indicating so (think it says alarm in German) theres a 6 pin(wire) connector and a 10 pin. unplug both connectors and look at the 6 pin connector. There is numbers where the wires are located on the connector, if you take a piece of wire and "bridge" wires 5 and 6 (The largest wires on the connector, red/red w/black stripe) your starter should work, any problem with the alarm system can cause the starter to be disabled. after bridging the wires or simply connecting them do not plug anything back into the alarm box, after this you standard vehicle alarm will be disabled permanently, but you will be able to start your car. If this dose not fix the problem you may have a defective starter, hope this helps.

timing marks on 1800 jetta 1994
the pistons should be tdc. the intermediate shaft im not 100%, but just check that the rotor points to where the distributor cap has the tab for plug no 1. the cam on top has a dot that needs to be about horisontal. just double check. as far as i remember the 8valve vw cannot bend valves if you place the belt incorrectly, but still double check on the net.
