There are several things that few people know about starting cars in cold weather. 1. Check your battery to make sure it is not rusted, leaking, and has a charge 2. Jump start your battery with another car, even if you believe the battery is good, this often times will still start your car. 3. If your engine is cold, and you have an older car, ensure to get your fuel lines to the engine flushed or have fuel injection service performed 4. The engine tends to warp the same way wood does during the extreme cold, do not be afraid to continue trying to warm up the engine by constant cranks with it is cold out. Your not going to hurt the car, the worse that could happen is too much fuel will enter the carborator and cause flooding in the system to occur. Wait 20 minutes if this happens and start to crank again 5. Bad spark plugs are a major reason why many cars take a very long time to start 6. Please have your spark plugs removed and exchanged for new ones. Over time, spark plugs become fowled and prevent the car from starting even thou you hear cranking!!!

I suspect that some how the spin on filter has been knocked loose and disturbed the integrity of the "O" Ring seal, or the spin on filter was put on wrong and pinched the "O" Ring seal. You will have to try a new filter and "O" Ring, which means draining the oil and replacing. When fitting a new "O" Ring to a new filter, be sure that the ring fits perfectly in the slot. Coat the "O" Ring with some vasoline to hold it n place. If the "O" Ring will not fit flat in the grove heat the "O" Ring in a pan of hot water for about two minutes. This will relax the ring and take out any folds.

have a look at the axle boots.if they are ripped, the grease gets out and the cv joint makes a clicking noise when turning.if it is a noise that is while driving like a humming sound,it could be a bearing.jack up the car and move the wheel up and down and side to side.if there is any play at all,it could be a worn tie rod end or ball joint, the upper control arm has a front and rear ball joint, and you can actually see it move if it is bad.if there is any play when moving the wheel, have it looked at by a reputable shop.

Sounds like a ground problem.Questions:
1) Do you have electrical or electronic troubleshooting skills and tools?
2) Can you read schematics?
3) Are you comfortable removing instrument cluster and working behind dashboard if necessary?
If all the above are true, then I might be able to hook you up with the help you need. However, it might be too much to post here.
Can a clutch be adjusted on a 1994 jetta-or do you
1st there are no free downloads of service manuals these are very expensive and they don't give them away, next the clutch is hydraulic and is self adjusting, sounds like the clutch is worn out on your car.

the pistons should be tdc. the intermediate shaft im not 100%, but just check that the rotor points to where the distributor cap has the tab for plug no 1. the cam on top has a dot that needs to be about horisontal. just double check. as far as i remember the 8valve vw cannot bend valves if you place the belt incorrectly, but still double check on the net.
