Won't stay running
When you say stalled, did you mean it cut out. Could be a problem with the ignition circuit in the ignition switch. Use a jumper wire from the battery to the coil and try starting it.
I have a 2006 Ford
You may not be able to really. Some of these have dipsticks and some do not. CVT transmissions do not but some 6 speed transmissions do. If you do have one it should be near the air filter box. IF you have one....put the vehicle in park and start it up. Leave it running at an idle for several minutes until its good and hot. While it is running and hot, pull the stick and check the level. (be very careful) Fluid should be red in color and at the point on the stick where is says warm. If it is brown, you have trouble, if it is low, you have trouble. ie leak. Either way you look at it. ANY time a tranny slips it DOES cause further damage. I recommend a tranny shop
