1992 ford ranger will not start

I would check the timing of the engine.
The timing may have skipped .
I would check the fuel pressure. The fuel pump could have took a dump.

Can you hear the fuel pump coming on when you turn the ignition key but do not turn it over to start.
IF you do not hear the fuel pump coming on replace it.

Extended cab. How do I uncross gears?

if you are stuck in gear it is not a basic rebuild but a bad rebuild because of the design of the gear selection process , it is impossible to have 2 gears selected together as one selector shaft will not move unless another selector shaft is in the correct position ( neutral ) to allow the detente balls to move out of the way so the next selector shaft can move it is possible that the gear stick is not in the correct position when it was installed back onto the top of the box and one gear was selected and the end of the lever came out of the selector slot or all the selectors were not in the neutral position and so the end of the lever went behind a selector rail pull the gear lever turret of the top of the box, move the selector rails until they all line up as a slot across all of them , then put the gear lever end back in that neutral slot

1992 ford ranger 4cy new battery starter and relay and ignition switch starter just clicks and cables get super hot

Resistance problem in the circuit. Are the battery cable ends original? If so, they may need replacement. I have seen a lot of problems caused by the original cable ends Ford uses after they become old. If cable ends have been replaced at some point and time, you can try giving them a good clean where they fit on the battery. Another quick test is to turn on the headlights and see if they come on/are bright. If not, wiggle battery cables to see if they come on/get brighter. This can indicate a cable issue

Exhaust removal required to drop transmission on 92 Ford Ranger?

Yes you do. trust me you don't want to get that thing half way out and down and not be able to continue. Soak those rusted exhaust studs in a good penetrating oil over night. I bet they come right out. I would not recomend cutting the pipe.
