No crank and stall condition when hot
Swap the fuel pump relay with the A/C relay and see if the problem continues. the A/C relay and the fuel pump relay are the same. If it continues, the fuel pump may be getting overheated and will intermittently shut down. The CPS will certainly do something similar but you wouldn't have spark either.
How do I manually get codes from a 1988 chevrolet
Put the paper clip between the A and B terminal on the data link connecter. That will be the top left two terminals. Do this with the key on. Now i dont recall if you leave the paperclip in there or just put it in a remove it, but try both and see which works.
The check engine light will flash then. Say it flashes 3 times and pauses, that would be a 3. Two flashes would be a 2 and so on.
Hope i was able to help you! I have barely ever got codes like this because i own a scan tool, but i believe i'm correct here.
I had put my car
Replace the hose that had a hole in it first. Next, take off the intake hose and use some fuel injection cleaner (you can buy it at your local auto parts store) and spray it into the throttle body with the vehicle running and have a friend give it gas at the same time to clear out the gunk inside where the fuel and air meet inside the chamber. The best thing to do is get it to your local Autozone (auto parts store) and borrow (for free) there OBD II scan tool. This tool hooks up underneath the drivers side steering wheel and will show you any trouble codes stored inside your vehicles computer. This will save you alot of time and money and pinpoint the exact location of your vehicles current problems. Replace your spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, and your spark plug wires. If it is still acting up and you don't get any trouble codes then have the ignition timing checked and adjusted or replace the throttle position sensor (TPS)
Esc code
Electronic spark control circuit. Code 42?
Ignition module or ECM.
My 88 2.8 cav is sputtering it is firing on all
Other than ignition timing, if you have fire, you will need to determine if you have enough fuel pressure to actually make the car run. This sounds like a fuel pump problem & other than that just make sure your exhaust hasn't gotten restricted and that no vacuum lines have broken or been pulled off. Fuel Filter good?
I assume you have no check engine light or trouble codes as nothing was mentioned & these are the most typical things to check that don't always trigger a code.
good luck
I have a 1988 Cavalier Z24, and the guy i bought
Take a 3' chunk off heater, garden,or fuel hose and stick it up to one ear while it is running. You can plug the other ear with cotton or a cigerett filter.Be mindfull of all moving parts as you probe around for the sorce of the leek.
1989 Z24, Pulled in my driveway. Stopped then it
heres a list of things to check: fuel filter(s), in tank fuel pump,(listen for a buzzing sound in the rear gas tank area when key is in the on position but not engaged in start), fuses(inside and out), fuel level, check for spark, (spark should be blue, not yellow)
I believe my slave cylinder is internal on my 89
The internal slave cylinder can only be accessed by removing transmission -- suggest you remove clutch assy and check before reinstalling the transmission -- you may want to replace clutch if worn down to rivets.
I have a 1988 Cavalier Z-24 with a 2.8 engine.
Clean the Air Idle control (IAC) valve in the throttle body, MAF sensor, and EGR valve. Also check or replace the fuel pressure regulator at the fuel injector rails, make sure all the vacuum hoses are good and replace any damaged hoses. NO check engine light is a good thing but here is a link for you to check the car for any DTC codes. Good luck and keep up the good work and keep the car running.
