First thing to do is check your fluid level, which must be done with the engine running. If the level is low, fill to correct level and try again. If fluid level is ok, I suggest changing the trans filter. If that doesn't help, I suggest changing the transmission, or getting it rebuilt.

All the 1940's thru 1980's & maybe more ,have
the fuses under the dash, on drivers side, to the left,
near parking brake

You have to test for voltage to the choke & for
a bad electric choke

your timing is off,get timing light and ck timing your back fire should go away

This starter is gonna have a main cable and possibly up to three fusible link wires that will go on the large stup on the back of the solenoid. The small swithch wire will go on the stud to the left of the large one. If the starter has a small stud on each side of the solenoid the switch wire normally goes on the side that bolts closest to the engine block. There may also be a ground wire from the back of the starter motor to the block on this model. It's easier to tighten the nuts for these wires before bolting up the starter.

I just looked at my El Camino and the trans. lines run against the oil pan and behind the starter
