This is done by a switch on the dash, if is an S10. It is electronic switch.

The pcm shows to be under passenger side dash. vcm shows to be underhood, close to battery.

chances are the linkage has come apart on the side of the transmission

it is on the drivers side of transmission where the shift cable goes to transmission it will have a electrical plug going to it.

Have you checked fuel pressure with a gauge ? Is the check engine light on ?

There are three on each side of the block(one under each engine mount) there are three of them in between the engine and transmission. There are also some in the heads(maybe, I can't remember the year they stopped doing these), front and back.

check for gas leak if none found these had a problem with the spider injection system inside the intake cracking causing a leak and no start due to the poppet injectors not opening due to weak fuel pressure. these operate at 56lbs pressure and its critical.

You can't go older. Changes were made in 1994 so some trannys from that year would fit but others won't, so best to leave them all alone. Sticking within 3-4 years from yours should be no problem. The scrap yard can tell you for sure .

You have a leaking injector assembly inside the intake manifold. These trucks had a very common problem with these. You'll need to buy the injector solenoid and tubes, it all comes as an assembly. The top half of the intake needs to be removed to replace it. I've attached a picture that shows the top half off and the injector tubes in question. Some people call this the injector spider as it kind of looks like one. The procedure is somewhat involved but if you google; "4.3 injectors spider repair" I'm sure you'll find many articles documenting it.

Probably the fuel pump relay is bad. You can go ahead and crank the motor over when the oil pressure comes up that should go ahead and turn on the fuel pump
