Check for a short or broken wire on the pickup coil under the breaker plate where the spark module is mounted. Distributor needs to be removed and torn down to replace if wires are broken What I think you're getting is that when the advance moves, it is breaking the connection in there. (could be wrong but I'm not there) Also check for spark quality and that the egr valve isn't sticking part way open.
Rare but also possible is a worn timing chain.
Injectors won't oppen
check for spark at coil if you have spark check for injector pulse at injector with noid light..if noid light does not flash check for power at one side of injector connector ..if you have 12 volts at injector connector but no flashing of noid light replace ignition control module under distributor cap
Will not idle
Idles so low it dies and you have to keep your foot on the gas or it runs fast and won't return to idle?
Rod knocking
It is true, however you will not likely be happy with the performance or fuel mileage. The 4.3 is too small and will be working too hard. If you are going to replace the engine you would be wiser and happier with a 305 instead. You only lose about 20 horsepower but you will gain fuel mileage over the 350. With a little careful driving you can get the same mileage out of a 305 as a 4.3 in a mid size car. Hope this helps.
My grandads truck he passed its been sitting up
if it was mine i would change oil, **** out old fuel, or drop tank. disconnect fuel lines from tank all the way to engine, and spray carb cleaner through them then blow with air hose. connect back up when you get a clean spray flowing through. add good fuel to tank and see what she says.
My 1988 chevy 2500 has been so reliable until it stated to stall.
Could be. But more then likely it's the gas. The gas you get these days from the pumps will gunk up after around 30-40 days. I'ld change the fuel filter see if that works. If not you might have to take the tank out to clean off the pickup sock. It's a small filter type on the end of the fuel pump. Of course, you should do a pressure test to see first.
Fuel pump problem
This is another thing you may want to check. Make sure you have power to the fuel pump and or your fuel lines maybe clogged. Hope this will help.
Flooding
try changing the coolant temp sensor if its reading wrong it will cause the engine to flood
