These problems are usually caused by a faulty blend door actuator which controls the position of the air mixing door, and in vehicles with more than one air zone (passenger/driver, front/rear, etc.) there will be a door/actuator for each. These electric blend door actuators are self-calibrating - there is a feedback circuit (wiper type potentiometer) that tells your HVAC control the position of the door. It is not unusual for this potentiometer to wear causing loss of signal at various positions, which then will cause erratic movements of the door (if the circuit fails to open circuit or shorting, the door will default to fully open or closed - i.e. hot or cold air only).

Auxiliary Air Temperature Actuator
The auxiliary air temperature actuator is a 3-wire bi-directional electric motor. Ignition 3 voltage, ground and control circuits enable the actuator to operate. The control circuit uses a 0-12 volt linear-ramped signal to command the actuator movement. The 0 and 12-volt control values represent the opposite limits of the actuator range of motion. The values in between 0 and 12 volts correspond to the positions between the limits.
When the auxiliary HVAC control processor sets a commanded, or targeted, value, the control signal is set to a value between 0-12 volts. The actuator shaft rotates until the commanded position is reached. The module will maintain the control value until a new commanded value is needed.

If you have some mechanical experience, have worked with removing and installing interior trim pieces, have a good set of tools, and have a lot of luck, you may make it in six hours. You have to discharge the ac system, remove the entire dashboard, remove the HVAC box, and open the HVAC box to get to the heater core. Then you have to put it all back together. To be realistic, figure on 10 to 12 hours. If you have a knowledgeable helper, you can cut the time almost in half.
