How can I reset the computer in a 1997 chevy c1500 vortec 4.3?
You can typically reset / reboot the ECU by simply removing power to it, i.e fuse and /or battery cable(s). IMPORTANT NOTE: You should probably wait for at least 15 or 30 minutes before you reconnect the power in case your ECU has capacitors which continue to supply back-up power for a certain period of time. (It takes a bit of time for those capacitors to drain.)PS: Although removing power from the ECU on many (most?) vehicles clears the memory. It's possible (if not likely) that many newer ECU's (will) have built-in "non-volatile" memory, which will require a manufacturer specific instructions to clear (i.e. an 'advanced mode 6' scan tool).
