1996 Chevrolet Cavalier - Page 6 Questions & Answers
I have a 96 cavalier and it shuts off while driving and won't start for 30 min. whats the problem
I'm not real sure, but the cavaliers do have a safety system that will shut down the engine if there is a problem so that the engine will not sustain major damage. For example if the oil level gets too low, the car will refuse to start until you add some oil. Maybe the temperature sending unit is bad, or malfunctioning. Have you had your codes read lately? Most part houses can hook up to your car and give you any codes that may be stored. I'd check all fluid levels. Make sure it's not over heating. I hope this sorry conglomeration of information is helpful at least a little. Good Luck.
TCC Release Swith needs to be fix. How do I do it?
Check your bake lights. If they don\'t come on, replace the brake switch (located on the brake pedal arm, under the dash) This is what controls the TCC solenoid off control. The jerk you feel is the transmission downshifting from overdrive to 4th or 3rd, depending on your transmission. If the lights come on, then you need to trace wires to the transmission to the brake switch or ECM.
How do i drain the radiator and refill it?
There should be a drain plug on the bottom of the back side that is either metal or more commonly on 1995 and above models plastic. Removing the cap will help it go faster, as air pressure fills the tanks to replace the fluid as it drains, but it's usually not required! Tools needed are usually a open/closed ended wrench and/or socket set. A drain pan or bucket is usually needed as State/City government laws make it illegal to just let it run out on the ground. Check your state/city government rules and regulations to be sure.
Have to put your pedal to the floor to have a 1996 cavalier even somewhat fire
Hello, check your oil level. They have a safety switch that shuts something down( sorry for the lack of vocabulary.) I did manage to start the car, and drive it home, and fill the oil. (about 5 miles). I had to hold both the gas, and the break so I could keep the engine idled high enough to keep it from dying at red lights, and or stop signs. That's my unfortunate experience/ attained knowledge. I hope this helps.
If timing chain breaks, will the car get fire?
If the timing chain breaks, the engine will stop immediatly, but there is no risk of fire. The main problem with this situation is that, if one of the valves fluctuate, it might impact with the cylinder head and make a big problem, a costly one. You'd have to open the engine to look at the cylinder head to see if it suffered any kind of damage. My suggestion is that you replace the timing chain before something like this happens and you get a bigger headache.

If you have a local scrap yard, contact them as they remove parts all of the time and they can advise you of how to put them back.
