Rent or borrow a coolant pressure tool. Hooks up to the radiator, pumps a little air in the system, should find the leak that way. Look underneath the overflow tank. Tend to find cracks there.

If it is electronic shift for the transfer case it could be an encoder motor issue. If you can hear or feel the transfer case shifting the next thing to check would be that you are getting vacuum to the front axle actuator and that it is not torn open. If you are not getting anything there, then check on the left side top of the transfer case, there is a switch there with 3 vacuum lines going to it. That switch is a very common problem to go bad and when it does it will suck the lube out of the transfer case and send it through the heater controls and up to the front axle actuator which will eat the rubber up on it.

So your current transmission is a 4L60E. t is a very strong automatic. You can also convert to a 5 speed or utilize the 700R4 automatic that is non electronic. Hope this helps narrow your search. Please rate me highly.

you need to make sure your spark plugs are in the right firing order!

That seems like a lot of money to fix a simple wiring problem. On the other hand, there are many processors (small computers) on many vehicles that can be quite expensive to replace. If you don't feel that you can trust your mechanic, find another one. Explain what the truck is doing and ask for a quote in advance. They may not be able to tell you the exact price, but they should be able to say 'if we replace the wiring harness, it will be about X dollars, but if it's just this wire and plugs, it will be about Y dollars.' Any good shop will be able to give you an idea what the cost will be, and they will be happy to call you, tell you what they found, and have you approve further work, if it will cost a lot.
