The fuel pump is bad, the electric motor was stuck in a bad position & when you hit the bottom of the tank it made the rotor turn to good spot which allowed you to drive. But make no mistake, the fuel pump is bad!

A red wire from the starter is broken. these wires have fuse links in them. probe them from starter to about 6 INCHES up wire with an ohm meter to check continuity.

Thats interesting - - the engine should start even if the water pump has been removed.An 86 model would have a V6 or a V8 engine and both use a distributor, have you checked for spark at the plugs and fuel in the carb or injector ??
