I have a -87 fiero
we see this quite often, the first thing to do is service the transmission, remove the transmission oil pan and clean it out if there is more then a tee spoon on metal on the magnet in the bottom of the oil pan then there is something wrong inside the transmission and will require you to replace the transmission, but if there is only a little metal and trash then clean the pan and replace the filter inside the oil pan and refill with new fluid and a qt. of TransX ( its like majic juce in a can you can get it at NAPA or napa.com )if after around 100 miles or so the problem goes away then service the transmission again and you should be good to go, if the problem does not get bettter or go away in a 100 miles or so then plan on replacing the transmission.....as far as the cruse system does it only not work in drive? or does it not work at all? we used to replace allot of cruse switches on these modles and quite a few cruse servo's......good luck
let me know if there is any thing else i can do for you.
I changed the egnition switch
This is a VERY common problem in GM vehicles. There is an anti theft security system installed in your car. When there is a communication break in this system, the computer switches off the starter thinking that somebody is trying to steal the car. Is there a light that says SECURITY on the dash when you turn the key forward 2 clicks? If you see this light at all, this is most likely your problem. Check out this link for a full description, and some DO IT YOURSELF options to fix this problem forever.

I feel really stupid -
Well, It is hard to say. If the mechanic had to run a wire and a fuse to get your radiator fans to work, I seriously question his ability to repair cars. That is not REPAIRING a car, that is RIGGING a car - and I really hate it when I have to figure out what someone else has done to the thing in an attempt to get things to work. My guess is that he simply found a fuse that is hot with the key in the ON position and tapped into it. - definately not the way to fix a high-amperage circuit like a radiator fan, but I have seen similar and probably worse things on automobiles in my day. Sorry if I sound really cynical, but I have seen vehicles burn to the ground because of incompetence like what we are talking about here.
When you are serious about repairing your radiator fan circuits, I can help you fix it correctly, If it has not been completely BUTCHERED!
