to remove the bulbs with out breaking them you have to push down and twist to release the bulb out of the locks in socket. yes bulb grease available to apply to the bulb contacts to aid in installation and prevent rust or corrosion. the linkage may be a factor for the bulbs staying on but a grounding problem is more common.

1977 ? egr valve is leaking, or the accelerator pump on carb is bad

you have a faulty electrical connection ,now check the battery first as the feed for the ignition circuits run from here and on such a old vehicle it could have been played with at some time in its life now you will have more than one feed wire from the battery to the fuse board but sometimes they take a feed from the starter motor as well so where the big wire goes to the starter check that as well ,now some vehicles have small fuse box by the battery as well which handles the heavy current then distributes it to the different locations .check the wires on the back of the ignition switch as well if no feed thenm its often quicker to run a new one direct from battery + terminal

will try to help, driver door# 1 vin# look on firewall all the way across under windshield. you may even have to de-grease firewall toeven see it. transmissioon, if origanil will have metal plate attached on it w/manufactures#'s on it. also look on drivers side front window,bottom, sorry, should have told you go there 1st. hope i helped!

YOU CAN DO THIS BY TURNING IN THE IDLE SCREW, HERES A PICTURE OF ITS LOCATION.

Check the Positive Battery Lead where it connects to the Starter Motor and also where the Negative Eatth Lead connects to the engine. Both most be clean and tight to carry the high currents drawn on starting.

The torque spec on the valve cover bolts is 3 ft pounds or 36 inch pounds.
This spec is good for all Chevy small blocks.

It seems that your car has the power brakes. If so, then hard pedal is caused by no vacuum to booster or vacuum leak. Check all hoses to booster and replace if cracked or dry rotted.
