Id be getting a scan and seeing the fault codes for the illuminated cel light. Being 1996 model you maybe able to get the fault codes youself by bridging the terminals in the diagnostic connector. Are both cooling fans on there high speed? Its unlikely to be a fault with "knock sensors"

Is this opti spark? The distributor cap is on front side of engine? If the picture I looked at in manual is correct, the two large holes in cap goes toward the bottom. The coil tower is toward the top. Of the course the mounting screw holes have to line up. I found the picture in online partsbook.

Your water pump has a small hole on the top and the bottom of the housing right behind the belt pulley. This is known as a weep hole and is there to let you know when the front seal has gone out of the pump and it is in need of changing. You really want to get this taken care of because on your engine the ignition system is ran off of the crank pulley and is known as "Opti-Spark" when the system gets antifreeze in it it usually goes bad. The Opti-Spark distributor sits right underneath the water pump, so a leaking water pump soon will take out your distributor which is another added expense.

the battery voltage is 12 volts if it is in good condition ( actually 13.2 volts) that is why a charge setting of 14.5 to 14.8 volts is necessary to charge a battery the 14.5 volts you are reading is the voltage from the regulator of the alternator ( engine rpm's 1000) If it takes a long time to recover which it should n't as it should be a constant output from the alternator ( engine rpm's over 1000) then the problem will be in the charge circuit you will have to read the current draw for the power steering pump to see if it is exceeding the required power setting to determine if the pump motor is faulty If the out put is low at idle but you want a higher rating you may have to find a smaller diameter pulley for the alternator to make it spin faster at idle I would suggest a talk and a check of the system by an accredited auto electrician may be to your advantage

This transmission is a 700R4 overdrive automatic. When it does this it only means the overdrive is burned out, calling for trans removal and repair. It has to go into 3rd gear before it can go into overdrive and the trans will not allow it to because there is no longer an overdrive function. Try this first, Go to the connection at the throttle lever, find the black plastic piece that the trans cable runs thru, open the throttle completely by hand and hold it open, with a finger into the opening above the cable push the button down and this will reset the cable back to where the transmission has to reset it automatically. Now get in and take it for a drive starting out from neutral and drop it into the next forward gear, which will be high for overdrive use. Now that the cable has to be adjusted by the transmission, you may have what you need. IF it still doesn't have 3rd, and engine speed goes up like your in neutral, then you definitely have to have the tranny rebuilt ir replaced.
