97 has 4l60 and in 98 some switched to 4l60-e.. which has shift solenoids.. all electric.. the connector on the side will tell you if it's the same or not. A 4l60-e won't shift if the truck takes the non-electric version..

it should be in the fuse box under the hood

see if you can find another steering coloumn from a junk yard, it will be cheaper than replacing the broken piece(s)

Had same problem with a Yukon. Turned out to be a bad fuel pump (Won't show codes.) When cold ran fine, heated up, no pressure. Would start after sitting for about 1/2 hour. When engine dies on you check for fuel pressure under the hood.

I would check the ground wire on the engine.

Could be the syncrnizer

when the problem occur keep ignition key on engine stop. with a test light find out if fuses have all current if not might be ignition switch defect

You may need to replace the external speed sensor switch located on the back of transmission next to the tail shaft. It runs about $26.00 and take less than 10 minutes to replace.

is it electrict or manual?

If your fuel pump failing the first thing you may notice is you will have trouble starting the engine after it sits for a while. You may also notice that your gas gauge is unsteady and flickers or vibrates. If you continue to operate the vehicle, eventually the vehicle will get harder and hard to start and eventually will not start. You can test the fuel pressure to be sure the pump has preasure. These symptoms can also be the fuel filter so start with the fuel filter first. If it is just hard starting after it sits then you should replace the fuel check valve on the engine. When the check valve is failing the pressure bleeds off over time as the vehicle sits.

Your oil pump drive is likely not aligned properly. Have someone jog (crank the engine little bits at a time) the starter while you are pushing down on distributor it should then drop onto the oil pump drive. You can also use a 5/8 socket on the center bolt in the crankshaft pulley and turn the engine manually instead of using the key. Remember to push down on the distributor while turning the engine.

You can also try with a light and a long flat tipped screw driver moving the pump drive manually. Remove the distributor and shine the light in the hole you should see a slotted shaft in the center of the hole way down in the engine. Compare it to the bottom of the distributor and you will see the drive slot @ the bottom of it. You now need to figure out where to manually position the pump drive in the hole to line up with the slot on the bottom of the distributor when it is seated properly in the distributor hole.

I prefer the first method. It is quicker and a little easier than the second.
