There could be play in the steering box, but it is more likely to be worn/loose steering components (ball joints, tie-rod ends, etc.). Check the joint in the steering column for play as well.

My 96 suburban timing is

I doubt your timing is off unless you have pulled your distributor. the computer controls the timing. There is a camshaft sensor in the bottom of the distributor that you will need a Tech II scanner to read and adjust the distributor setting. Normally the distributor being moved does not create driveablility issues.

My Suburban has been "shutting

Hello: You could have one of two problems: Either you have a intermittent passkey lock cylinder or a worn our ignition switch. You might go to Auto Zone and have the system checked for codes, If its a passlock problem there should be codes. I would think it might be the ignition switch if the truck quits running. Due to age and mileage it could be both.

How do i change a

the gas filter is located under the truck on the frame rail (driver`s side) You need a 5/8 line wrench for the gas lines, along with a 13/16 or 21mm wrench for the gas filter. Hold either wrench and turn counter clock-wise. You may have to soak the filter and lines with penatrating oil to loosen it up. Make sure you where saftey glasses and don`t even think about smoking..
As for draining the tank, that is more difficult-you will have to drop the gas tank and tank support straps. Not something you want to do at home.A lift hoist will be more safer and the proper way of removing the gas tank. If you are draining the gas because it`s old, I would just run it through with fresh gas added. this will save you fustration..Or to drop the tank-go see your repair shop for this service. Remember gas is very dangerous and expensive too, if you don`t know what your doing.-leave it to us pro`s to do the job right the first time. I guarantee the lines , straps, and filter will be very rusted, and will give the mechanic some difficulty preforming this repair due to the age of your truck...
