How to replace iginition switch
To replace the ignition switch remove the horn pad be careful the wire is still attached to the turn signal switch the plastic piece push down and turn it comes out then remove snap ring on the end off the steering wheel then nut place a dot of finger nail polish on the shaft and wheel for alignment purposes use a steering wheel puller once off then install a lock plate puller compress down and remove lock ring once removed (lock plate) this is spline d to go on one way then take the cancel cam off (slides off) remove turn signal lever screw and turn signal screws lift up to gain access to the ignition switch retaining bolt a small piece of plastic is covering the screw that is the key buzzer switch it just pulls out be careful not to drop the spring steel retainer down the column it does not come out that easy and does not install that easy either. Place ignition in the on position remove and put the new one in the same way this allows the key buzzer to go in with out interference from the plastic shoe that's part of the switch. the lock plate tool can be rented from the parts store.
Need to change on ignation switch
look directly under the switch where the key goes in. there should be a small hole. Insert the key into the ignition then find a pin or a small tool that will fit into the hole. press it inward and this will release the lock that holds the keyswitch in.
Change ignation switch
easiest , is to pull the steering wheel... there is a screw / clip that holds the lock bracket in place........ i've seen a few lock specialist do it with out taking the st. wheel off... but $$$$$$'s ..
Gmc truck wont start
You replaced the starter and solenoid. Did you check to see if you have battery power at the large starter post, and on the small wire coming from the key switch ?
Runs on idle but no acceleration
Is it fuel injected? Mine is throttle body injected and found the injectors were dirty. If you haven't done so yet try running some fuel injection cleaner through it. Might have to do 2 tankfuls of fuel and cleaner. Also first check the fuel filter passenger side rear. Fuel filter is cheap and usually solves alot of problems
Where is the oil pressure sending unit on a 1987
- You should have two of them (which went to one in think 1991 or 1992)
- The sensor by the distributor is for the oil pressure gauge - see pic below.
- The sensor by the oil filter worked with the fuel pump power circuit see - pic below.
- If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
- Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

89 gmc f150 v6 chugging out like its gona die
F150 is a Ford model truck, not GMC.
But at any rate, since I don't know if you have a Ford F150 of some kind, a 87 GMC S15 or some kind of 89 GMC with a V6 I will suggest taking the ignition module to an Auto Zone and having them test it (A free service). Also test the fuel pressure.
If a tune up and fuel filter has not been done in some time that could very well be an issue.
Autozone does not carry code reader for any
You can get any type scan tool or code reader you
want, at any price range on the internet
You have an OBD1 Vehicle (1981 thru 1995),
so you need one for that
You know any repair shop has a scanner
If you live in the world of free your in trouble.
The check engine light on
I would take it to an autozone, oreily or advanced parts. any of these places will hook their computer up to your vehicle and tell you why the light is on.
