Wait, your water pump is leaking? if so, that is your problem. Water pumps will slowly leak coolant if their about to go. The thermostat can get stuck open or closed. I'm not sure where it is located in a VW Golf 1997, but it is most-likely a pain to get to it should be done professionally.

Does the fan turn freely in your hand? possibly a faulty thermostat on the radiator or the water pump isn't working (your car would probably be dead)
