1990 Volkswagen Cabriolet Questions & Answers
1990 Cabrio water pump leaks on start
Any time ANY vehicle leaks at that weep hole, it's because the seal in the water pump has gone bad. All water pumps have this same weep hole in the same position to let you know the seal is bad. Makes no difference if it has a penny over the hole or not, replace the water pump and it won't "p" on you any more.
For safety reasons I need to remove the riders headrest. I am giving up trying
There are no acceptable safety reasons to remove a head rest in a car as they are designed to prevent death in an accident. If you are stopped at an inspection site you will be charged for this offence. Anyway if you still want to remove it then there should be small buttons at the base on the top of the seat near the rods . press these buttons while lifting out the head rest
Turns over but will not fire, after heavy rain
simple, you are getting water into the fuel tank, few possibles 1st the seal has gone on the fuel filler cap,2nd the fuel filler neck pipe is corroded. replace these parts, get the fuel tank drained clean out all the muck, blow the fuel lines with air,fit new filters clean carb ,id advise also bypassing fuel vapour seperator and fit a new fuel pump and whilst your there change the carp flange gasket....this will sort everything.
Highbeams work, low beams do
The problem is most likely your cars multi function switch. That is the switch that controls your blinkers, dimmer, and everything else. If you change the switch that should solve your problem.
I'm getting fuel to injectors
VOLKSWAGENS THE 1990 MODELS HAS CIS - E FUEL INJECTION. THE FUEL INJECTORS CONTROLLED BY AIR FLOW SENSOR PLATE REST POSITION INCORRECT. INSPECT AIR FLOW SENSOR PLATE REST POSITION. LOW FUEL PRESURE FROM WEAK PUMP WILL CAUSE FUEL INJECTORS NOT TO WORK.
Head lighst do not come
Check the fuses, I am not sure if the 1990's had a headlight relay or not (My 1987 Cabriolet does not) but if there is a head light relay its by the battery, if there is one, put your ear down by it and have someone turn the headlights on, you should hear a click.
Also, the turn signal switch/cruise control switch, pull it forward towards the steering wheel and see if the lights come on. If the headlights come on when you pull that assembly towards the steering wheel I am thinking you have a bad headlight switch.
I have a 1990 VW Cabriolet that ran out of gas,
Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. You probably need to prime the engine. You need to put a little gas into the intake and then try starting it. Check to see if you have a fuel reset button. It may be located in the glove box. If you prime the gas, it should start. You might have to do this a few times before it will catch. If it doesn't, there might be a chance that you have another issue. Make sure you can hear your fuel pump kicking on when you first turn the key. Do this first. Turn the key on for 10 seconds and turn it off for 10 seconds. Do this 5 times and then try to start it. Repeat the process if you have to. This will prime the fuel pump.
The drivers side window stopped
First you check the fuses
Then the switches
Then open up the door panel &
put 12 volts to the motor connnector
If you pull the switches out you can check
voltage at them & you got the fuse, any relays
covered.
I personally only work off wiring diagrams
Any other way is just a waste of time & not even
a good guess at what your doing.
My engine turns but no spark I changed ignition
Depending on which engine your car is equipped with; the following components could be at fault.
Crankshaft Position Sensor
Camshaft Position Sensor
ECM (Engine Control Module)
Distributor Cap or Rotor
Fouled Spark Plugs
Bad Plug Wires
If they haven't been replaced in the last 30K miles, I suggest you check and /or replace the the plugs and wires first.
If your engine is equipped with a distributor, check and/or replace the distributor cap and rotor if it hasn't been replaced in the last 30k miles.
If your engine is equipped with crank or cam sensors have them tested.
I need a grill for
I would suggest looking on an online auction site or perhaps even an online VW forum. There were many of these Cabriolets produced and a used grille should be easy to obtain and inexpensive as well. They are also very easy to replace on your own. Just a few simple clips and screws are all that keep it in place.
