87 vw cabriolete car over heats both the oil temp
have a compression test done to check for head gasket or cracks.. Check coolant level in the radiator not the reservoir. Have a cooling system pressure test done to check for leaks. Have a flow test done on the radiator to check for blocked cores. Have the fault codes read to check for sensor/ servo failure.
Main relay
yes this is an easy fix. just open your hood, search for the fuse/relay box, then replace main engine relay.
Vw cabrilet cuts out when driving
Hi if your car runs fine from cold and starts fine when cold, but then if it starts playing up when it gets to near running normal temp then this is a good indication that the oxygen sensor is up the shoot and will need replacing.
the reason it points towards this being the fault is that the oxygen sensor only starts to work when it reaches a certain temp so if your car runs fine when cold but plays up when hot or warm then the chances are getting the oxygen sensor (or lambda sensor for its proper name) changed should then solve your problem.

Loose drive belt can cause this. Corroded wires can cause this, the corrosion can and will travel up into to the wire. Alternators do check out good as long as put out 12 volts.

Is your electric fan coming on? There is probably a fuse in the engine compartment that protects it.

After running for 10 minutes
This vw has two fuel pumps one low pressure pump in tank and one high pressure pump under car make sure both are getting power and both are pumping, next try switching out the coolant temp sensor for the computer. The old vw cis fuel injection systems are very complex, so if you don't know what it is don't touch it get a book or better on old vw mechanic! ; )
