2002 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo S - Page 9 Questions & Answers
Just replaced the timing belt, water pump when you
Code in ECU will likely be a P0300 series, P0301 is #1 cylinder misfire detected and so on and so forth to P0304.
If this happens only cold there are a few reasons for it.
Oil too thick. Should have 5W30 synthetic oil.
Oil Pump making too much pressure.
Max oil pressure must NEVER exceed 90 psi at any temperature, or any rpm.
If oil overpressure, you need a new oil pump. Do not clean up the oil pump! It lives in the oil pan.
What happens is, the oil pressure keeps the hydraulic valve elements from allowing the valve or valves to seat ....this make a misfire.
Another reason could be damp in the Spark Plug Coil tube causing spark to short to ground.
VW coils are rubbish too...you may find the coils are going out.
Would assume by now you have a cure but if not here's a shop finder :http://www.iatn.net/shopfinder/
PO672 CYLINDER 2 GLOW PLUG CIRCUIT, THIS IS WHAT
If you have replaced the glow plugs....replace glow plug harness. If code reappears, replace glow plug controller.
FYI: VW numbers the glow plugs backwards. IE: #1 cylinder next to the timing belt cover is number #4 glow plug...so your #2 is actually #3 on the engine.
The blue temp icon comes
Faulty thermostat is most common problem. Blue lamp on indicates coolant not reached operating temperature.
Blue Lamp hould stay out when coolant reaches operating temperature. VW have updated the Coolant Temperature Sensor. Thermostat is opening too long allowing coolant to cool below operating temperature tripping Blue Lamp..
New sensor should be GREEN in color and lives on the coolant hose running back across the rear of the engine.
When getting one replaced make sure you get the 'O' ring and new plastic clip to hold it in, along with the Sensor. They are orderable separately and your VW parts guy will not offer 'O' ring and clip unless you ask.
Check coolant is circulating into the bottle on the inner fender .
These engines also suffer from failure of the coolant pump when the plastic impeller breaks up or comes off the drive shaft. this causes overheating.
2003 Beetle turbo-13 trouble codes-PO300-multiple
Low fuel pressure will cause many of those codes to set.
Should have around 3.5bar pressure at idle and full throttle.
Check to see if VW has a recall on the ignition coils. They are cheap to replace however.....you will need your VIN# when you call.
Alternator problems can also trip codes . Check for a/c ripple at BATT + on Alternator...no more the 0.05vac allowed.
Valve train noise common complaint. ...often due to lack of oil services and/or incorrect oil type.
All 1.8T engine will clatter on start up one time or another and is considered normal as long as it goes quiet after 2 to 5 seconds at idle.
You should have synthetic oil in the engine.
P0012 is often timing incorrect. ...check timing belt at tdc.
These engines need a timing belt every 50,000 miles not the 100,000 miles VW suggests. Belt failure is catastrophic.
Transmission codes often corrosion in loom connections under battery. These need checked and cleaned with a solution of STABILANT22A applied to the pins.
If a scanner is available clear the codes and drive for 40 miles or so and recheck for codes. Transmission codes are not always due to transmission faults. They need 200 miles to re adapt after batter replacement or power off.
ROSS TECH site has lots of info' and a scanner program for your lap top.
Turbo is leaking oil
I presume this is a 1.8t engine.....if so : If it is an internal, engine smoking problem.....
you need to replace the turbo soon otherwise the catalytic converter will plug up and engine will loose power.
If it is leaking due to turbo seal at scroll or oil delivery, it needs resealing. Check here for a shop near you: http://www.iatn.net/shopfinder/
Turbo R & R is an involved job and best left to someone who has the tools and expertise to do it.
Will take the average tech around 6 hours to complete and more if rust is a problem with the nuts/bolts.
Turbo can be bought on-line at Part Geek or other VW turbo specialist sites.
Check engine light on, oil
I would start this diagnosis by verifying that you do not have a mechanical problem like a blown head gasket or bad turbo. Check the oil and coolant and make sure both are full and the fluid is clean. If the either fluid appears milky you have a severe mechanical problem.
Let me know the status of the fluids and we can proceed from their.
My temperature gauge turned from
when the blue light is on its telling you that the engine is COLD and not to use full power.the other warning light is telling you that you should check the water system for fluid/levels/airlock.
Car will start but shuts
I have a 2004 vw Beetle 2 L engine that had the same problem.
After taking it to two mechanics finally diagnosed you need to start with replacing the Air Flow Meter. Fortunately for me this was the right fix.
It is an expensive part ($150-$200) that can not be returned.
You can also try a junk yard, you pull it and they run $40-$75.
That is what i did and it worked.
Good Luck.
My car has 26000 on it and is a 2003 turbo s
low mileage but old ?' difficult decision but not insurmountable ,take the cover off the timing belt and have a look ,if cracking apparant at the base of the teeth then change it if no cracking then leave well alone unless you live in a desert type dry climate ,if so then change it regardless as the plasticiser in the belt dries out
Hello, I have a 2002
you can go to an auto parts store and with there hand held scanner then can tell you why the check engine light is lit, the lock/unlock sounds like a relay problem, Do they work when buttons are pushed? If so, perhaps need to be re-programmed. Hope this helped Tim
I keep getting a PO221 code reading on my OBD-II
You need to test voltage and ground if you have less than 5 volts you have a problem with voltage not a problem with the throttle position sensor you may have gum build up in the throttle plate not allowing the plate to go to the full close positions and that can throw the same code you are getting. Also if you have a reading of .2 ohms or more from battery post to ground or to engine to ground or to engine ground to throttle to ground that could be your problem, after testing these items then next step is testing computer. But try cleaning the throttle assembly plate inside the backside and in the mouth where the plate goes. Also the Wide-open and idle position must be set when replacing the sensor or you will get the same error.
